It goes up to eleven now. Well, it goes up to 4K, anyway, and I've just ordered one, as I still use Chromecast a bit and my current model is a couple of versions prior to this one. They're currently on offer at £39.00 at Amazon, or £39.99 from Google, instead of £59.99 for the 4K version. The standard 1080p Chromecast is either £24.00 or £24.99 instead of £34.99. Unlike previous iterations, they are now shipping with a remote, because they have pretty much the same variety of online TV - both free and premium - as the Amazon Fire TV has built in. It'll be interesting to see whether the Chromecast or the Fire Stick gives me the best Prime Video picture. Anywho, the bumph is here... store.google.com/product/chromecast_google_tv?hl=en-GB

That gives our Rokus a run for their money, especially the 4K version.
However, I do like the Roku interface and very slick usage.

No, we have two Rokus on the kitchen and bedroom TVs, which are non-smart TVs, and they work really well for HD streaming.
The main LG TV in the sitting room streams 4K direct via its own apps.
We have no need for a Firestick or Chromecast.

I almost bought one after reading your OP, I don't need one but....... 😁 Edit: What puts me off this and other devices like the Fire TV stick is the memory capacity, I mean 8gb, come on, once the OS is on there you're left with 4gb or less, pathetic esp when a lot of apps use a decent sized cache. 32gb needs to be the minimum, 16gb at a push

I've got the PC to do that on.

I've plumbed the new Chromecast in, and although I haven't had time to mess around with the new menu etc. I've got iti streaming a football match (Liverpool FC Women v Brighton Women) from the FA Player on my PC to the 55" LG, and I can see an immediate improvement in picture quality against the older model. Whether it's upscaling or not I haven't a clue at the moment, but I reguiarly use a Chromecast to ship footy from the FA player to the big telly, so the improvement is easily apparent.
The only downside ia, we've just gone 3 - 1 down, but that's probably not the Chromecast's fault.
So far, it's a success. Quite honestly £39.00 for the improvement in picture quality alone is worth it, whatever delights are behind the new menu.
One downside, the setup is fairly easy, but slowwwwwwwwww.....zzzzzzzz.
[EDIT]I've just found this on Reddit...
Which, perhaps, explains things.
