Gold Note A3 Evo ii
Introduction
The choice of speakers is a personal thing. Factors in the decsion process include budget, room size and personal tastes. Over the last few months I have listened to 18 different speakers and since lockdown I have owned 6 different speakers in my system. This has motivated me to take my time to find the right speakers for me.
I chose the Gold Note A3 Evo ii in the cheaper black version. They are small but heavy for their size.
240mm W | 350mm H | 295mm D
10Kg each
They came individually packed. And with packing weigh 13kg each.
The best finished speakers I have owned. Although to be honest that was not a consideration in my choice. Anyone who knows my system would say I am a sound first guy.
The speaker specs
45 to 20000 hz +/- 3db
Impendence 6db
Initial Impressions
Initially I played Those who Ride with Giants: Numinous
The first thing I notice is the Mids. They allow me to sink into the music. I also notice how wide the soundstage is.
Setup
I am to place a bit closer to the wall as the speakers for me this is a good thing as allows a bit more space between the speakers. I have the tweeters facing forward with no toe in.
I thought I start with a quick overview of the performance.
Bass
It’s not the last word in bass extension. Those that like deep bass look elsewhere and get some Tower speakers (It is not bass light and goes deeper than you would guess). What it does have is a sense of natural timbre and speed. On Flamenco bass it captures the tonality . The bass is precise and has that sense of speed. The other thing is it just integrates into the mid bass with ease.
Mid bass attack is what I hoped for. On the Light of Seven when the Timpani strikes close to 6mins, the sound explodes
Mids
Out of all the speakers I heard the Evo was the most natural I heard. Its easy to hear the body of an instrument, its depth, tonality, and colour, it all sounds natural. What I notice is how well I can hear the individual threads of music no matter if it be vocals, piano, percussion, or strings (acoustic and electric). Like I am listening to music and not the speaker. The speakers do a great disappearing act.
Treble
Highs are clean with lots of detail. For instance, I can hear brush strokes on drums. The stereo image is good you can clearly hear where the musicians are in the mix. To be honest I am not used to this degree of imaging and detail, even with open baffles.
Overall
I originally bought these speakers because I loved the Openness of the Mids and effortless of the speakers what I was not expecting was how dynamic they are. Boy do these speakers like to rock. Playing Dream Theater is a blast.
Buying speakers are always a risk. I did fair diligence, but until they are playing in my room in my system, I knew it might still all go wrong. Thankfully they more than meet my expectations. I have a big grin on my face.
The biggest take away from this is just how personal speakers are. I heard speakers that I thought were awful and yet others love them. It also allowed me to better understand my own values towards sound better. End game speakers? Who can predict the future? But I am satisfied that I could not find better speakers that suit my particular needs and tastes for the price I paid.
