Discovered in 'another place' and must be good as black 4 coasters for just under £39. If they didn't do the magic I can use them as coasters or weights on top of kit. Played a favourite track, twice Placed the 4 coasters together on top of my TAD D-1000 CD / Pre / DAC Was like the volume had been turned up, more detail as well. System sounding wonderful on CDs I know well from the album playlist Take them off Same sound and still fabulous (Uh ?) Tried a couple of times, same result System sounds great with or without them so I have taken then off for a day or so and will try again. Does Shungite work ? I'll get back to you. 4x Shungite tiles 10x10x1cm, 4G 5G EMF Protection # Genuine Karelian Shungite

Shungite is a black, lustrous, mineraloid and was first described from a deposit near Shunga village, in Karelia, Russia, from where it gets its name. Shungite can be low-carbon (5% C), medium-carbon (5-25% C) and high-carbon (25-80% C) percent by weight of carbon and the carbon base of shungite is a multilayered fullerene-like globule with a diameter of 10-30 nm. Shungite has been reported to contain trace amounts of fullerenes (0.0001 < 0.001%) Amongst ancient cultures, shungite was said to be related to allergies, skin diseases, diabetes mellitus, stomatitis, periodontal disease, hair loss, cosmetic flaws, and many other diseases. Shungite has been used as a folk medical treatment since the early 18th century. Peter the Great set up Russia's first spa in Karelia to make use of the water purifying properties of shungite, which he had himself experienced. He also instigated its use in providing purified water for the Russian army. The antibacterial properties of shungite have been confirmed by testing. Shungite exhibits antioxidant properties. In 2017, research suggests that a fullerene-based compound within shungite has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action against UVB-induced skin damage. Shungite has been used since the middle of the 18th century as a pigment for paint, and is currently sold under the names "carbon black" or "shungite natural black". In the 1970s, shungite was exploited in the production of an insulating material, known as shungisite. Shungisite is prepared by heating rocks with low shungite concentrations to 1090–1130 °C and is used as a low density filler. Shungite has applications in construction technologies. Crystal healing pseudoscience proponents and 5G conspiracy theorists have falsely alleged the misinformational belief that shungite may remove 5G radiation from their vicinity more efficiently than any material of similar electrical conductivity would do. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ShungiteYou can get a 10% discount on your Shungite here thecrystalcouncil.com/crystals/shungite if you use the code "SORCEROR", and you can even get shungite body lotion, not to mention handy "Phone Tiles". There's loads of Shungite on Amazon too.

I've ordered a 10cm shungite pyramid for testing on various components. If it works well, it could replace some of my door stop weights.

Shungite coasters taken away to the other end of the house for a few days to make sure any residual pixies dust dissipates.
System sounded fine over those days
There might be a confounder. On top of the TAD are 4 Black Ravioli pads, two granite placemats, Electric Beach boards. (Yes, looks weird, but works) Originally to allow the 4 Shungite coasters to fit on top of the TAD I moved the Black Ravioli pads apart to allow space to slide the coasters in.
Tonight I tested the Black Ravioli pads in the original position and wider a few times. No Shungite in the room.
Unless I'm imagining it there is an improvement in bass, top and mid range detail with the BR pads wider. Most of all more width in the sound Could this be the BR pads working magic on the electrics in the TAD as well as absorbing vibration ?
Placed the Shungite coasters back and those improvements take another step up
Weight on top of the kit and electrical damping ?
System sounds better than ever

I have received my shungite pyramid now, Mike. I might try it tomorrow on top of my 2nd (most important) clock.

One last test tonight
Move the Shungite coasters from the D-1000 onto the M2500 Power Amp Sounds louder, more bass
Not sure I can trust my ears so will come back to this tomorrow

Do a full frequency measurement sweep before and after..
Overlaid you will see if there are frequency differences that your ears are picking up

I doubt that a frequency sweep will ever show up the differences any more than they do with fuses, power cables etc., even with equipment much better than we have.

Do a full frequency measurement sweep before and after.. Overlaid you will see if there are frequency differences that your ears are picking up How do I do that ? More to the point is there something we can measure to show a difference in sound (quality) ? You'll need a measuring mic, some plug straight into USB of laptop, otherwise a little mic phantom amp and USB in. Free SW (Holmimpulse is amazing). Easily less than £100 to get set up. I don't think you can detect quality as such but what you can see is dB differences that we perceive as brighter, or more attack, dull muffled, more bassy, more treble, more clarity for example. Example; If you measured, then measured again with a thick cloth over the drivers, you'd hear the difference right. The measurements would show dB drop in the frequencies the cloth absorbed. Now if you placed reflective surfaces adjacent or behind yourself, you'd hear brightness. This would be shown as increase in dB in those frequencies. If you put in cable that you perceive as muffles the sound or is not as clear, you would see a drop in dB in those frequencies. The opposite of something that boosts a sound characteristic. I've done this in back to back tests. It shows increased / decreased dB in certain areas, clearly visible. Now whether or not you like the change depends on your ears / how your brain process info etc. Not all ears are the same, we age, suffer hearing damage, are just plain wired differently to one another. We all hear roughly the same but there are significant nuances I believe. It's not necessarily aiming for a perfect flat response either. Your ears may need a boost at some frequency. The mic doesn't lie about what's 'in room'. Your ears may.

I'm battling with the shungite pyramid versus a granite coaster and Schramm weight. The Schramm is beating it every time so far. The shungite seems to be adding a bit of upper-mid beating, especially in harmony singing, that I don't like.
I'll leave it alone for the moment. At least it makes a decorative piece.

It's Russian, so maybe that accounts for the attacking overtones.

Perhaps the key Taking what our MartinT did and extrapolating Listen to track Place Shungite on top of TAD D-1000 Yes. Wider, more bass, more detail, 'louder' Swap out Shungite coasters for black (obviously !) granite coasters Either the same effect or too close to call Left the granite coasters on the D-1000 Shungite moved onto the M2500, on top of 2 existing granite placemats Even more width, detail and bass, 'loudness' Granite placemat and a couple of coasters (I'm running out of them) on top of the existing 2 granite placemats of the AM conditioner More of the above and the bass is positively growling now Following the science More weight on the kit gives a noticeable step up in sound quality Not what I expected Does Shungite have magic properties ? Maybe, but a heavy object like a granite placemat or coasters, IE heavy and dense has the same or a close enough effect How much weight can be helpfully added to improve sound ? Does density matter ? Do try this at home Remember to protect your kit of course and not block any air vents etc

I do think weight may well be the key, Mike. The Schramm weights on top of granite place mats or coasters are heavy and provide considerable damping. Anything with a clock seems, in particular, to be beneficially affected.
