A contemporary 20th Century work by Armenian composer Edvard Mirzoyan (1921 - 2012), I find this concerto approachable, tonal, interesting and entertaining. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edvard_Mirzoyan

4/5 I rather enjoyed that, Jerry. It was quite dramatic, and it wouldn't have surprised me to learn that it was originally scored for the theatre.

This is a strange one for me to score. On the one hand, it complements the strengths of my system. The Timpani and strings all impress me. However, I could not see myself listening to this often as the music does not grab me the same way. So a three from me.

I had absolutely *no idea* what to expect from this but was fully engaged with the music from the opening bars, laden with intrigue as they are and swirling with a somewhat brooding and menacing atmosphere. The writing for the strings is rather propulsive and gripping, both massed and solo. Excellent and persuasively taut performances all round. Somehow the primeval tension is skilfully maintained throughout the work.
A lovely discovery from Jerry - I have saved it for later listening on the main system where I look forward to doing it full justice.

Brooding darkness captures the opening well. There's a touch of Shostakovich in there although using a different language. I don't know where an Armenian would find his influences from?
Only time for the first two movements tonight, but definitely want to hear the rest.

Returning to the 3rd movement and it's more of the sense of doom. Really good orchestration, too.
Hang on, what's going on in the 4th? Hmm, strange ending with a kind of Shostakovich cynical humour?
Very good. 4/5.
