The most commonly used digital inputs are optical and coaxial. Generally I believe that coaxial is a better connection, although I did find with my previous Cambridge Audio CXC transport that the optical connect appeared to be better.
There are lots of digital cables on the market and different price ranges, and it is about trying the right one for you.
Additionally, there are other digital connections but I have less familiarity with those, so maybe someone else could help.

The most popular digital audio data format is S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface).
This exists in different physical formats: - optical (TosLink) - co-ax with phono plugs - co-ax with BNC connectors - AES balanced with XLRs
They can all do a good job, but optical is more prone to jitter than the others.
