There seems to be more people who prefer the look of the hour glass stand over a short straight pipe. I like both and have a very slight preference for the straight pipe but I haven't modified the hourglass stands yet. Maybe my view will change after that, who knows. Nobody really replies to my thread on hfs as it's 186 pages long now and folks are getting bored of it I think.
The current pipe I have is only 6" long and if I cut the hourglass down to that length there won't be much hourglass shape left. I have tried a straight pipe of 9" length so maybe I could split the difference and try 7.5". The only reason I can get away with such a wide range in heights is because the tweeter sphere is fully adjustable for tilt, I could have it pointing at the ceiling if I wanted. I currently am able to get the centre of the mid bass and centre of the tweeter much closer than if they were both mounted on the same flat baffle which can only be a good thing.

I prefer the hourglass, if it helps!

I have started modifying one of the hourglass stands. Made a hole with a dremmel and cut off disc and then went around with a hacksaw blade. It needs cleaning up a bit but here is a pic with 5cm chopped off the top. That is a 30cm diameter pig anti stress ball sat in the top, it's exactly the same size as the steel sphere. I like it better already, the sphere sits in the top now very snugly. Below is how it was I am going to modify the bottom as well. Will try taking off the bit that straightens out right at the bottom so the curve flows in to the base . I will see what that looks like and whether I should go any further and cut off the same amount as I did from the top (5cm).

Aesthetically, I prefer the variant in the last image (the original) as I like the discontinuity that the straight-sided part of the stool creates.

Sorry Pete, I don't think I can live with those straightened out bits. I would like to ask members to position these different mock up's with their favourite first. Many thanks, I would be very grateful. Please remember the final thing will be the steel spheres with the circular wooden base with the inner tube "bumper". The yellow and pink ball are used because it's not easy to move the steel spheres from one to the other and I'm listening to them now So, Number 1 is the steel sphere with straight pipe Number 2 is the sphere in the tall hourglass stand Number 3 is the sphere on half the hourglass stand with straight flange at the bottom Number 4 is the sphere on the smallest half hourglass stand (has been cut down)

Option 5 - I can cut down each end of the hourglass stand equally so it is 20cm long in total. There will be some of the hourglass shape intact but obviously not nearly as much. The speaker will be shorter which is important for me both visually and sonically (there is more boundary reinforcement for the bass). Here is a diagram as if I cut the stands so short there is no going back and straight pipe it will be if I don't like it. I like the straight pipe by the way. Sorry to be a pain. if I can't decide then my wife will have the last word . Here's the pic

My favourite was with the earlier tall version of the pipe. Tandberg used to make a not vastly dissimilar speaker to that?

My favourite was with the earlier tall version of the pipe. Tandberg used to make a not vastly dissimilar speaker to that? You mean the longer straight pipe Jerry ? I have some slighter wider (135mm diameter) clay drainage pipes that might be worth a try. Let's see how many different materials I can use, list so far is steel, brass, wood, polyethylene, sand and possibly clay or polypropylene or pvc.

Yes, I like the look of the tallest pipe stand you've shown.
Your trouble is that you've got a hyperactive mind that is more like a buzz saw than anything else. I can't actually imagine you settling down with anything!
