Apart from Apogees, I have never heard panel speakers really come alive. Some get close, like the big Martin Logans, but as a genre they don't really do it for me.

Yes, the Mark and Daniel speakers are expensive new. But they occasionally come up used in the UK and quite often sell quite cheaply as they are not well known here.
I must admit that my previous love affair with class D amps seems to be well and truly over. I'm no longer at all convinced by their portrayal of music.

In my experience, the larger Maggies do come alive, but they need really grunty amplification to grab them by the b**** with a vice like grip. Some Maggies are better at this than others. I was seriously impressed by 1.7,much less so by 1.6qr. The smaller ones like I mentioned earlier tend to be much less demanding, but also are constrained by their smaller size!

I think they are starting to get class D a bit better I heard the SMSL SA400 for their price a crazy bargain and a lot better in the mids than the Temples

I might just move to headphones for a while if the MA silver 100 do not work out. I want to get this right and the bass whilst a lot better than the Heco in my room is still over powering the mids with rock. Tracks become bass heavy and then become tiring/ I really want to get this right as I can I will need to hear some JBL speakers soon

Opinions on those JBLs seem to vary a bit. Some folks love them, others like the review below rather less so, complaining of an overly bright sound. audionostalgia.co.uk/jbl-l20t-review/Personally, I'd wait for something a bit bigger to come along. Edit - hey, where'd the JBL link go?!

With a separate mid driver, they didn't suffer from the same issues and had a good balance and decent attack. However, I wasn't thinking of that range when recommending JBL to John, I was thinking more of the Pro range that don't seem to be sold here any more. These, for instance (4310 / L100): audionostalgia.co.uk/jbl-l100-century-review/

I have been watching a Magnenpans setup video. Unfortunately I just do not think they will work in my room. Even though open baffles do work.

Interesting review Describes the aspects I am looking for I just doubt they would work in a 4 x 3m room.

I have a stupid question Apart from blocking the ports (seems to rob some of the sound quality) Could I use a filter to cut down the bass on the SA100 as just becomes like drum and bass when playing Dream Theater Sounds great with other styles of music. The bass starts to dominate and the mids are way in the background Otherwise they will need to go back

What aspects make you think smallish Magnepans wouldn't work, John?
From my experience, panels can work much closer to the back wall than people often think. I've heard Quad 2805 actually standing in a very shallow alcove, almost no space behind them. That will never work, I thought. But they sounded great!

Just experiment with a thick sock in each port, that will give you a quick idea.

I can manage about 1m from the wall which is about 3m from my ears to the speakers

I don't know what kind of floor construction you have John or what you have the speakers on. It would be a shame to discount speakers when something else is causing the problem.

Cheers I wish I had the skills to build a inner tube isolation platforms and tools. The speakers are getting a lot better (bass has tightened and got faster) I am using a 15mm yoga matt. My friend Vic tried a number of different materials and liked this the best. I actually enjoyed Dream Theater on my system for the first time in a month. Sound if not right is the one thing I can go a bit crazy with if I do not enjoy.
