I first came across Andrew Bird while flicking through some of the NPR Tiny Desk live performances on YouTube. It is still a favourite performance. I tried the album from which the tracks he played came from, but they seemed rather too refined and over-produced when compared with the live versions. I also tried some of his earlier ‘ambiance’ recordings which, while interesting, did not grab me. Some time later he produced another album and so I decided to give that a go and was impressed. Going back to his earlier work has also been a more positive experience and I play several of those as well these days. Aside from his skill as a violinist and being able to whistle in perfect pitch(!), I really enjoy his verbose lyrics and the construction of his songs. Now the question is of course, will you? open.qobuz.com/album/di1yxhr6sndgc

This is new to me. At the moment it's about a 3 for me but I could see this improving over time

It's mastered at a very high level, somewhat compressed (replay gain -10.95dB). I had to drop the volume 7dB from my norm, which is exceptional.
This is a pretty good set of songs, well performed and his whistling is in keeping and not too prominent. Good ensemble band playing. I like that there's space in the music. 4/5 which on your scale is a 2.

I played this today and enjoyed it a lot. It reminded me a little of Brendon Benson and also Elliot Smith. I will be going back to this soon and then I will score.

I think it's great. A score of 2/Cracking from me. I shall be poking around in the back catalogue of this bloke to see what else he has been up to. Thanks a lot, Pete, for pointing us in his direction.

I'll give that a "cracking". It's driving me mad trying to work out who he reminds me of, and the answer may well be " himself," because I know I've heard his stuff in the past. I could have done with a bit less whistling and a bit more adventurous instrumentation, but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Catching up with this one and it gets a Cracking form me. Like others I was trying to think who he reminds me of, and Badly Drawn Boy came to mind, not sure why, anyway I really enjoyed it and has gone into the Qobuz saved bin.

This is quite nice and I've never liked anything that sounds like this. The closest maybe I've come to anything even remotely similar to this is Mumford and Sons.
I've heard Archipelago and Proxy War and enjoyed both.
I normally avoid vocals too. His voice reminds me a bit of Hozier and his track "Take Me To Church".
