One of the things that has helped me is listening to other people's systems noticing what I liked and did not like and then figuring out how I was going to apply that into my own system Yes it helped me to a certain extent, but went down a wrong road, changed the amp and result, now my friend is listening to mine scraping his head.

Sometimes an inexpensive shot in the dark can reap rewards, but I agree that lots of research and listening in the context of your system are most likely to be successful. As for 'better' is always round the corner, I am so astonished at the sound quality I now have, with full due respect to the engineers who laid down to tape far more musical information than I ever thought possible, I am reaching the point where satisfaction and musical discovery are taking precedence over improvements. I agree my shot in the dark with the Krell amp was an educated leap go faith, I talked to three other audiophiles I knew who over the years had gone through various system changes, had experience of Krells and one who still uses them. The result has been quite stunning for me. Don't get me wrong I am not saying its the best or that it could not be improved upon, I am sure that there is an amp out there that would offer better clarity, depth etc perhaps a MOON BY SIMAUDIO 700I V2 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER and then better Wilson Benesch speakers to gain more scale and presence. I am unlikely to be able to achieve either of these due to financial constraints and room limitations, so for now I will remain happy with the synergy of the combo I have. One thing I have noticed as better synergy is achieved between amp and speakers is that this can allow other equipment to shine, different cartridges TT & Phonostage, CD, DAC etc, however with a more revealing system then anything lacking in SQ from the inputs to the amp can be highlight more, perhaps as you would expect. I found this with my rather simple RPI/HiFiberry HAT set up, which lead me to replace with different solution, microRendu into the Audiolab DAC which has worked out very well, not the best in digitalism but meets my needs.

Even if there was such a thing - not everyone would agree. You only have to hark back to group reviews when you had say 5 or 6 or even more, listening to an item and evaluating it. How many times would you get them all in agreement as to the sound quality on offer? Practically never.

The "best piece of kit" exists until one finds the next "best bit of kit." How many people here are still improving on what was their "end-game" system of a couple of years ago?

The best kit in the world ever for me in the early to mid 80s was
LP12 / Naim 32 / Naim 250 / Isobariks
Wonderful
Oh ! You say the world has moved on ....?
