Oh I see. I've used that Avatar for years, proving that the Chord remains constant while all else changes around it. It's used in many forums and I'm loath to part with it now.

Listening for another evening with the RDC Cones in place under the Chord, I can hear more clearly what's happening. Apart from the overall improvement in clarity, they have markedly reduced bass overhang. Bass is now very tight indeed and there is greater differentiation between those recordings which have potent bass and the ones which only play at having bass.
I may have to review the amount of port stuffing in my speakers, but meanwhile this is very pleasing. The amount of transient edge impact is approaching that of John's system, which sets a very high bar.

Funny little bits for not a lot making kit worth £1000s sound better.......
Will take the legs of my 2600 tomorrow when there will be no interruptions
Sunday may be busy with the big Mana change around but I may try some items under my 1200E

Be patient and take it slowly - you don't want to scratch your lovely 2600. Make sure your 3mm hex key is long enough to get through the heatsink fins to the bolts.

Oh I will
This is the reason why I often say I will do things and don't - for a while. Planning and care needs time and a clear head

Martin, how do newer offerings from Chord compare, do the improve on yours and do they maintain a consistent house sound?

Funnily enough, Martin, the only other Chord power amp I borrowed was the SPM-4000 and it sounded virtually identical to the 1200E. My previous 1200C was not quite as open and potent.
I can't speak for the rest of the range, especially the new small dinky models. From speaking with John Franks, I got the idea that the 1200 Mk.II (a slight refresh of the 1200E) is the epitome of their stereo power amp designs and may never be replaced. Further up the range, they are all monoblocks.

Excellent power amp, from a great brand. The last two years at Bristol the Chord room has sounded excellent to me. I hear the amps to be very neutral, tight & controlled.

I haven't been to the Bristol show for the last couple of years, Dale. This would indicate a remarkable turn-around as Chord have been singular in their crapness at demonstrating their own equipment. It didn't help that they used to use those bloody awful Wilson Benesch speakers for so long, but I have never heard a Chord system really sing at a show. Very annoying considering I hold my power amp in high regard when people keep asking me why they sound so shite!

Naim 500 is currently £18,695 Martin dragged his ancient Chord around to MM towers for us to compare to my Naim. No competition. Has to be Naim. I was sorry I was wasting his time. Surprised, well a bit more than that. To my ears the Chord out performed the Naim rather well. Martin agreed, but then he was biased Swapped around a bit, confirmed.... damn I picked up a 2nd hand 1200E for just over £2000 Checked Martin didn't have the golden sample... Nope, this one also out performed the 500 as well I'd say it was a damned sight better than anything I've ever heard
