Rory Gallagher - 'Overnight Bag'
This is a track that I first heard in my teens. 'Photo Finish' was my first Rory Gallagher album. After a gig at the Dome in Brighton, I decided 'Shadow Play' was just perfection, so I bought the album. I saw him play three times in total and commenced to hoover up all of his albums, including the Taste ones, just as soon as I could. My own taste at the time, was more tilted towards heavier music but I always liked a good slow burner and 'Overnight Bag' is a great one.
Some of us will remember recording albums on tape for school friends. They'd give you a C90 cassette and you'd put the two albums of their choice on it - one album on each side. There was nearly always a bit of tape on the end of the each side where you could put a few tracks of your own selection to showcase your latest discovery or old favourite to your unsuspecting friend. The next day you'd give your mate his tape back and then the day after that, they would say "What was that track on the end of side 1 (or 2)? It was brilliant/crap/weird/boring" (delete as appropriate) and your reputation as someone with amazing taste in music would either grow just a little bit more or be knocked back to zero in one fell swoop.
'Overnight Bag' was one of the tracks that found its way onto the ends of countless tapes that I made for my friends (and myself). I introduced loads of friends to Rory's brilliance this way!
The track itself has four guitar solos (Four! Count 'em - four solos!) and each one is a hairs standing up on the back of the neck moment for me every time I hear it. I think it's just a study in sheer musical brilliance.
