Hi Chaps,
Just a peak into the myriad of thoughts pervading my mind, is my tonearm mounted in the incorrect position?
According to a friend who builds plinths my 3009 should be mounted behind the deck on the right rather than down the side, this is recommended position for a 9" SME anyway as putting it down the side of the 401 restricts adjustment because the deck plate is so large and puts the arm further away.
First photo shows SME 2000 plinth with tonearm mounted on the side [could this be factory pre-drilled?]. AF black and red top plinths, same position but last two photos show arm behind the deck. Who is right?

Where it is is largely irrelevant, what is important is that the baseplate is angled so it is pointing straight at the main bearing so that when you alter the pivot to spindle distance to line it up, the same angle is maintained

As Ant says, the actual position ought to be irrelevant as long as the baseplate lies on the tangent somewhere on the correct arc. If you felt like you wanted to, you could have it on the left hand side, pointing backwards as long as those criteria are fulfilled.

Does it meet the criteria that you both refer or should it have been mounted higher?

The baseplate is not pointing at the bearing spindle on the black one meaning it will be more difficult to line up when you come to change a cartridge. The others look fine. It will work perfectly well, there is no issue with that, but is not best practice. Sometimes it is unavoidable.

Forget the other photos, this it is my deck. If it is incorrect I will get a new plinth from Russ Collinson.
