Coincidence has brung me to three recently
Beginning to understand that I do like female vocals, but only some and they may form a genre
My recent three all came following rabbits down holes
Emeli Sande who I love doing this
Grabbed Our version of events. Not sure I'm sold on our Emeli after a couple of plays
Anastacia kept popping up in an Ebay search so I followed the rabbit
Time will tell. I think I like her
Being reminded of Bonnie Raitt I looked up my files and found I already liked her and had forgotten !
Ooh very nice
love her guitar playing too

There are so many styles of female voice, Mike. You need to expand your horizons.
Sandy Denny we've been talking about, the epitome of proper folk songs sung exquisitely well Karen Carpenter and k d lang, two of the most gifted females ever in terms of a 'perfect' voice Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Jewel for great country voices Beth Gibbons of Portishead, Joan Baez, emotion drippings from their singing Juliette Commagere, Sharon van Etten, DeLooze for characterful songs and singing Norah Jones with her sultry/breathy delivery Rickie Lee Jones and Edie Brickell for lazy Californian drawl Patricia Barber and Diana Krall for smart jazzy style Jessye Norman for unparalleled operatic power Nina Simone, no-one like her at all Joan Armatrading, Tasmin Archer both high quality songs and performances Sia of Zero 7, Brandi Carlile and Nelly Furtado for full on power Hope Sondoval of Mazzy Star, ambient and atmospheric Mimi Parker of Low, understated and effective low key singing
It goes on and on. You cannot just dislike female vocals, there are too many styles!

Yus. Wot I said in the OP
Currently struggling with Emeli and Anastacia - who I just discovered are well known - they were new to me !
Bonnie sings a good tune and plays a mean geetarr
Sandy always was a fave as is Mimi Never could make up my mind on Armourplating Recognise some of those you list.
There are also quite a few male vocals I don't like

Strange that none of those three come to mind when I think of great female voices.
Yes, I know you like some of them. Just suggestions for further listening as I love every one I listed as having something different and special.

There are others like Mavis, Dusty and more that I could dig out given time Laurie Anderson pretty good Quite like Janita "Jenny" Haan from Babe Ruth Slits, Kleenex are interesting. A little raucous

I loved Maggie Bell's voice. I saw Stone The Crows a couple of months after Les Harvey died, I think it was their first gig after in fact. Jimmy McCulloch (Thunderclap Newman, Wings) was deputising on guitar and later joined the band permanently.
It was a heck of a day, Some new band - who nobody knew much about - named Roxy Music opened the show and blew our minds. They officially premiered "Virginia Plain," that day. In fact, they opened with it I think. It was released as a single the following month, and the rest, as they say, is history. The rest of the bill wasn't too shabby either, Arlo Guthrie. Osibisa, Loggins and Messina, and Edgar Winter headlined. Hippy Daze Happy days.
As per normal, I can't resist a bit of Trivia. You probably know that Maggie Bell sang "No Mean City," the outro theme to ITV's "Taggert, " cop show. Did you know, though, it was written by Mike Moran, whose writing credits also included "Barcelona," for Freddie Mercury, and "Snot Rap," for Kenny Everett? Oh, and "No Mean City"? Lulu was also a contender to sing it. I think they chose wisely.
It's still one of the best theme songs ever.
And here's a little bonus for you, Mike.
I actually share a Birthday with Maggie Bell, but she's seven years older than me I believe.

I hear her name brought up everywhere often but I don't know of anything about her other than that this performance is stunning.

Been thinking on "female vocal" and adjusting my viewpoint.
The overall effect of the music is what I like. Often female vocal is not music I like much
Emeli Sande doesn't appeal with her sort of music, the track on Trance excepted, where she is singing only.
Anastacia has good and bad about her singing, over the top sometimes and the music, pretty good if MOR
Bonnie Raitt sings and plays good music and I like her geetarr playing too.
