Thanks Note the router did not move once and most of my figures were 10 minutes apart
Speedtest is my current tester so I'll carry on Is it worth changing servers on Speedtest ?
Current state : Three router off Laptop 2 off.
This from 1st laptop via Plusnet wifi.
Typical I get different happenings from my 2 different laptops Hoping the shut downs will allow me to access the ZTE (not Huawei) router website

Nothing broken that can't be broken a bit more Cannot get into the Three router now. More slog and then maybe give up and send it back

Honestly, Mike, I don't know what you do to equipment.
Just factory reset it and try again. Forget using your laptop, which clearly has a stuffed ethernet port.

Completely agree,Dutch the crappy laptop until it’s repaired or replaced, then use a good bit of kit to establish a good network an md be done with it, or go round in ever decreasing circles

I have to have a connection to reset. The ZTE router I have replaced the previous Huawei in early July. This started using laptop 2 and cable. Connected but went weird after I gave it the WLAN key Back to the 1st laptop with the broken ether net port that did have wifi but has now lost it There are stories on the web that don't look good Three have a support desk I'll be onto tomorrow

One more go before giving up today
Laptop no.2 sees the router via cable and connects to the web
Why is that ? Computers innit

So does laptop no2 also connect with WiFi? If yes then it seems your network is working.
Laptop no 1 I presume does not connect with either Ethernet or WiFi or if it does is erratic, so as I said before it needs data on it backing up, and then a full erase and install of Windows, if it still does not work then it is a hardware failure! Time for an engineer to check it or buy another.
Use laptop 2 for now to check the broadband speed with Speedtest and see what results you get. If it’s poor or very erratic then it could be, router issues, telephone line issues, or throttling by supplier as I already explained.

Will check laptop 2 for wifi later later and work my way around the house again to check best postion
Laptop 1 may be helped by Three support. Little to back up then Chkdsk first

Chkdsk says all ok Assume the ethernet port is a hardware problem and the wifi is a different one as wifi still works on Plusnet

Did you examine the USB port and establish damage or not?
Assume nothing with the WiFi, as I said before it could be the WiFi card, a corrupt network setup, or failing hd. If WiFi is working fine on the other laptop then you need to get the dodgy one checked out or you will go round and round in circles.

Spoke to Three support.
Live Chat I explained what I had and what I needed "Phone Broadband support"
Took a while, discovering on the way I have a phone number for the box even though I don't think I can phone on it. Pretty good Indian guy who told me to press the reset on the back panel of the router after some questioning Not there Confirmed more than once this is a ZTE router not Huawei. Looked on the base, sides, ah.. Found the tiniest reset on the top of the router. Reset Speedtest came up with 3Mb download. He told me to check in a couple of hours Latest is 21 but I think it will still be variable
Laptop no.1, that lost Three wifi is all ok now

21Mbps is fine if it's stable. How did you get a ZTE router?
I'm impressed with the Huawei.

The wi-fi speed will be entirely dependent on the chipset in the laptop (could be wi-fi 4 or worse) and its distance to the router.
Cabled is nearly always going to be faster.

Cabled and wifi both highly variable again today
The cabled one was under 1Mb for one test. Over 20 for others

Stability around the same figure which allows the boss to be on Zoom for a few hours The faster the better even though a handful of Mb gives me what I need Much better today Testing on my 2nd laptop on cable. I'm also using it for wifi on my main, 1st laptop and it has been glitch free

Problem solved, Mike. If Amazon don't stock it I bet Wish or AliExpress carry it.
