Thanks for the suggestions. I am not very experienced in these things so any advice is welcome. I used some wood from an old bed along the bottom and it is a slightly different colour.

Only if you make a convincing Leopard skin effect! Stain and then oil is much more forgiving and easier to touch up.

Not if you use a fairly light stain and aren't too heavy handed. Many years ago I stripped and repaired a lot of old painted pine furniture. Prior to staining I always 'moistened' the surface with white spirit and then applied a spirit-based stain. I a;ways thought that Georgian Medium Oak gave the nicest 'antique' effect and then finished it with Danish Oil. Where areas do not match well you can add in (or omit) extra stain.
