All though I have several of those albums only one stands out as a clear memory and that is ELPs "Pictures" I remember buying it and marveling at how different it was from ..well everything really , I was 15 . I'd have been 17, and it was Pictures... that started me off on the road to Classical music. I thought I'd have a listen to where some of ELP's source material was coming from. I bought a cheapo Classics For Pleasure (orchestrated) version, coupled with a nice bit of bit of Tchaik, and the rest, as they say, has been a long-term drain on my wallet.

My Dad had a habit of buying albums from Readers Digest and the like, which was odd as he didn't like music. We had loads of Concert Hall and Classics for Pleasure label LPs. I started playing absolutely virgin vinyl on our Dansette and the rest, as with Paul, was the start of never being rich.

That album list is impressive my favourite on it would be "aqualung" but how i discovered that album sheds light on what others in this thread have also pointed out. In the early nineties i was a very poor student and used my dads donated free hifi which was good quality pioneer stuff ie pl115d turntable etc. But i couldnt afford cds or a cd player so bought up boxes if 7" s and lps at sill prices people were shedding vinyl like the plague. But it allowed you to album hop rapidly. Or for example just buy anything with an atlantic soul label, they look cool but for 1 classic you found or liked there were 4 rubbish ones. But it allowed you to explore many genres with little risk. The present day streaming apps have now given my kids the same freedom to explore with argueably a lot less exercise.

Every generation has its day. They all get nostaligic. They all start living more and more in the past the older they get. The type of music, shows etc change but human nature does not.
Nothing wrong with it.
We have no idea what will be of value to the nostalgic oldies in 50+ years time.

Nothing wrong with it. We have no idea what will be of value to the nostalgic oldies in 50+ years time. The other side of this is that there’s little sadder than oldies getting too much into the very latest music too obviously. Music is very much of the time and your age in combination. Generations want to reinvent themselves. So many things are the same, just with different names. I even remember programming but now it’s coding.

Calling records "vinyls" is too much for my sensibilities.
I've embraced a lot of new music, but there is even more dross - as with every era.

I can guarantee you that my late father would not have believed I'd still be listening to " that rubbish," let alone " that noise," " that racket", and " that row", even after my constant assurances that I do indeed " call that music," and that in fact that I could indeed "understand every word he/she was singing." And yes, it was " singing, Dad". If we're fortunate, and I was, there will be some overlap, some convergence. We both liked The Beatles, The Shadows, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, Oscar Peterson, and loads more. We even watched a late-night series on TV featuring Big Band music together. One of the best gigs I ever attended was when I was " tricked" into buying a ticket to see James Last. I never could get him into Emmylou Harris, though. He always complained that she was " singing through her nose".

To my Dad, all music was rubbish. At least he was consistent.

I span all sorts from early 60s to now with an awful lot that I will *not* listen to Do not like the 50s sound but happy with a lot of older blues Buying music the way I do, following rabbits down holes, I'm often surprised at the date of issue The boss has taken the place of the parent with How can you enjoy this ? and the others we know so well

How very odd. I've looked at the underlying code, and it's all completely gone, as if someone has edited the entire post out. Anyway, I've found the original list, so here it is (again).

This is there, Paul, but I don't know why it's no longer working.
