Hello all!
I've not been very present here recently. Truth be told the past few months have been pretty rough and I've not had much room in my life for nice things like music and hifi. But I specifically requested this Album Club slot and it's a great excuse to pop in and say hi.
I'm not entirely sure why, but I really enjoy advent, and Christmas music is a mainstay of the season for me.
Of course, a lot of Christmas music is just terrible, and many of the supposed classics are really not my cup of eggnog. For example, I could do without pretty much any of the Christmas songs which have made some kind of dent in the UK charts over the past 40 years. But I can't get enough Christmas jazz! I have a pretty extensive collection, and choosing something has been tough.
I was very tempted to go with 'A Charlie Brown Christmas', from the Vince Guaraldi Trio. This, for me, is pretty much the Christmas album, and has been since I discovered it as teenager. But it's become increasingly well-known on this side of Atlantic over the past 10 years or so, and I want to pick something folks here would be less likely to have heard.
But if you haven't heard it, here it is:
So, my pick was going to be John Zorn's 'A Dreamers Christmas', but this morning I discovered that this album is no longer on any streaming services. There are a couple of tracks on YouTube, which I'll post here so you can get a sense of it. It's a great album - you should get it.
So, plan B:
I've picked Jimmy Smith's 'Christmas 64', otherwise known as 'A Cookin' Christmas'. I love the heaviness of Jimmy's playing and the bombastic big band arrangements. Here you go!
I saw Slinger deliberately didn't included a poll with his last Classical Album Choice - is that allowed!? Let's see
