I must admit, the thought of getting rid of some cables, a box and Volumio is very appealing.

Yes, it depends on the board. Pi and Asus can be bettered. I never bothered with it much.

I had not previously bothered with BT with my Topping D90 but thought I'd give it a try. For convenience and family friendliness it gets 5*. Streaming Radio Paradise FLAC via my phone the sound is pretty good but not quite up there with the ATB USB input (via Oehlbach reclocker and expensive USB cables). The sound is better when my phone is in the same room (better link, I suppose). I initially tried without the D90's external BT antenna. It worked but only if my phone was close to the DAC. If you have a metal case, as I do, for the ATB, you might similarly need an external antenna, if such a thing exists.

What code are you using as the Topping has HD APX and LDAC Worth playing with the bit rates etc in the developer section if you not done this You need to go into your phone settings at the end you see develper options I think you have to tap 7 times from memory but once you do this no need to repeat you can choose HD or LDAC see what works best for you For YouTube I find 96 24 works best For Spotify 44 24

Bt5 excels with YouTube a musical experience with the added bonus of watching the performance Like Clive I prefer the Limetree Network Bridge for files Spotify Tidal and Quobuz I am using the same power supply for both

LDAC is the default setting for both is from the Bluetooth options. I finally figured-out how to get to "Developer Options" - tap 7 times on the Build Number in the About Phone-Software information. By default the D90 shows 96 KHz. Since most of my material is 44.1 KHz I have selected that; it sounds marginally better. Switching to APTX does not seem to affect the BT connection to the D90 (stays as LDAC). There is no HD option on APTX either.

I have a BT5 receiver on the way and have a question about volume attenuation in a BT5 system.
I'm wondering whether my passive is going to be redundant in such a system?
I'm going to be using my phone with Spotify as the source, so am I able to use that to control volume? I could then go direct from DAC to power amp.

It is probably better to control from the passive preamp I usually control via my DAC But try it from your phone I am presuming the following chain Phone Receiver DAC Preamp Power Amp

Yes that's right.
I will try it both ways - the purist in me says that analogue attenuation will sound better but the lazy part of me likes the idea of using the phone!

You'll probably find volume control from your phone has too large steps between levels, mine has only a dozen or so steps between mute and full volume. That's generally too coarse a resolution for getting just the right volume setting.

I have been comparing APX to LDAC I am unable to compare with HD APX I have a preference for LDAC just seems to have more depth

I also solved why the BT 5 receiver was not performing as well I git a 10 inch tablet the same time but using Android 9 so unable to access LDAC Spotify was defaulting to SBS. On my phone no such issues so will upgrade Tablet and hopefuly that will sort out issue

That's interesting John.
I'd be very interested to hear your assessment of Spotify using LDAC. Are you able to try AptX HD on your phone?

My Teclast tablet won't upgrade from Android 9 to 10 but, fortunately, DLNA doesn't need it.

With Spotify I have to change the settings a bit to get the best out of Spotify. So set up at 44.1 not 92.2 it is easy to do in Developers Option It softens the sound a bit in LDAC I not felt the need to try this when using YouTube premium My BT receiver does not do APX HD so unable to compare
