Simple question: Is there anything in the rules of hockey that allows for a foot deliberately raised to neck level without a foul being called? I'm guessing not. From what I read at the time it was a deliberate kick while wearing what is the equivalent to an offensive weapon. Manslaughter all day long. The player who died was assaulted and the fact that it happened on the ice makes no difference unless the player committing the assault can prove that he was not physically in control of his actions, which, as a pro, he should have been. Maybe he didn't mean to kill him, but, that's why it's not a murder charge.

Gosh, I hadn't read anything that suggested it was deliberate. That changes things.

Tbh I'm not sure if there is a rule for that we have one called high sticking (raising stuck too high when taking a shot), but not sure about the skates. I'd like to find out tonight. There was once a player in the 90's named Chris Simon. The guy was a felon in ice. He hurt people with his skates deliberately. Btw these hockey players make a tiny fraction of what Basketball players and especially baseball players make here in the states.

I dont a miss a game. I don't remember which one it ws but recently at some point in some game there was a huge pile up of guys right at the goal net and one player was on all fours trying to get back to his feet and his skate swung in a perfectly vertical motion inches from a guys face. It wasnt brought up in the broadcast I just happened to notice it. Had that skate or motion been errant and just titled a bit...the kind of damage it would have caused would have I think just caused the game to end right then and there.

What would be the reason for not wearing a neck guard now?

I don't know for sure but I've chatted with a few guys who play hockey at lower levels and they say they sacrifice safety for comfort.
I suspect guys in the NHL aren't wearing neck protection in order to feel less encumbered. Including goalies who constantly have guys crashing into them at high speed.
It's becoming more clear to me all the time how dangerous this sport is.

Sounds a bit like driving without a seatbelt!

Ye it's wild how this sport purposefully was much more violent 20 and 30 years ago with fights being a major crowd pleaser. And there are still fights but far fewer than before but just the actual gameplay I think we are seeing now can be quite deadly too.

Talking of protection
Madam insisted I wear a helmet when cycling. PITA, especially when it was really hot
Until One night coming home, dark, lights on, reflective strip all over I was knocked off by a bloke that 'didn't see me'
Wasn't nice. Tried to get up but couldn't move, shock I guess
My helmet was smashed. Could have saved my life or serious head damage. I now always wear a helmet when cycling

Oh my god you were hit hard enough (or fell hard enough from the hit) for the helmet to break.
Amazing how someone intervened (the boss) not long before this happened and it may have saved your life.
I think a lot these days about how we gain the illusion of invincibility sometimes when performing dangerous tasks.

I'm cycling along minding my own business Coming from the other direction this guy turns in front of me Big bang I fly over his car and hit the road with my head and shoulder, think I also had grazes on my knees and elbows The helmet was mashed and took a lot of the impact All this about a mile from home

I've just read that the English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) is making neck-guards mandatory from 2024 onwards. Some clubs, like the one in my local county, are already wearing them.

I just don't understand the reticence to wear helmets - when I see people cycling without one in London it just astounds me with the number of serious accidents here. Some go fast, some don't but it's pretty much irrelevant when you see the speed some cars are doing.

The Googlemancer comes up with the fact. Thank you Paul. This is very interesting to me because if one league does it I could see see other leagues following suit and this adds legitimacy to the notion of making neck guards mandatory. Honestly I've never seen an incident strike fear like lightning so fast into the hearts of players and organizations enough to enact change so quickly like this and I've seen plenty of 110mph baseballs be hit directly at a pitcher (and a few fans) causing an entire stadium of 150k to go dead silent for 5 solid minutes while injuries were attended to. Thanks Paul, I'll look into the EIHA.

A friend in Holland has just voted in the Dutrch Election. There are 26 parties involved, and "Tweede Kamerverkieving" translates as "Lower House election" in English He says, that "...when you get to the polling station you are confronted by this:" " A list of more than 1100 names of which you must choose JUST ONE! Filling in the little circle beside it in red pencil.
Anything else and the form is declared invalid.
Proportional representation - don't you just love it? "
