| Today in 1946 WWII veteran Maceo Snipes was shot in his back by the KKK the day after he became the first Black person to cast a vote in Taylor County, Georgia.
After he was shot, Mr Snipes walked three miles to the hospital with his mother.
For six hours doctors left him waiting and bleeding.
By the time he was seen, he needed a blood transfusion.
The doctors said the hospital had no “black blood.”
Snipes died two days later.
This is why I will vote in every election. The day I stop voting is the day I stop breathing.

Why on earth were tourists still flying to Rhodes yesterday with the worsening fire situation? Now they are sleeping on the streets or staying with locals etc Jet2 and EasyJet and Tui have now, temporarily at least, cancelled outgoing flights, and I understand there are " repatriation" flights being organised. Thomas Cook announced it has cancelled all holidays to Kiotari and Lardos, until 31 July. To be fair, I suppose that as flights were going ahead normally, up until Saturday evening in some cases, the punters thought they were OK to travel.

Wow this is wild. Tourists sleeping on streets or at local's homes? I did see a photo of the sky at Rhodes. Very dark grey sky during the day. Unbelievable. It's so hot in that region now that people are advised to avoid drinking alcohol or coffee. www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/23/high-winds-expected-to-impede-fight-wildfires-in-rhodes"Greece is becoming Dubai...the unpalatable truth is as clear as the blood-red sun that sets nightly over the Attic skies. From Spain to Cyprus, the Med is on fire. A region designated a global heating hotspot in the decades ahead is turbocharging, ahead of its time, into the climatic niche that ecowarriors feared." I failed to ask this before but are fellows in the UK experiencing non stop rain? Here in New England it has rained for almost 3 months straight. I don't recall the spring rain season ever extending all the way into late July nearly without a break since mid April.

The UK remains entirely normal, with a cool summer and intermittently drizzly rain!

Trouble with YOU cancelling your holiday is, I assume that you get nothing back, you would need to wait on the tour/flight operator cancelling to get a refund or exchange. Damn right I'd still be going especially if it meant getting my money back or my holiday, in fact we're off to Rhodes in August, can't wait 😊

Meanwhile, on the "other side" of Europe, Liverpool's match in Germany has just kicked off after being delayed by 20+ minutes due to persistent and torrential rain.

From 9.20 this morning to just now with some breaks I just watched 8 hours of the World Cycling Road Race
I did wonder if I should spend that time and World Champs races have been boring before, but anyway Kept my attention quite nicely from Edinburgh to Glasgow, then the boring bit, umpteen circuits of Glasgow
Except it was brilliant. What a race
Mathieu van der Poel a worthy winner. Strength, strategy and resilience after a crash on a wet corner Either one of the best or the very best Worlds I've seen
On BBC IPlayer I'm sure. You could watch the last 50k if pushed for time, 100k better Epic, mental, wonderful

Do IT customer service agents really refer to the callers as PEBKACs? Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair? Awww cmon, man. We often referenced the "UDI" or. the "BKI" - "User Digital Interface" or "Brain to Keyboard Interface" - i.e. the user's fingers.

Lmao
If we callers only knew of the bumpkinry with which we are lumped in with by the IT people who probably are thankful that we were able to find the power outlet to plug the contraption into.
"All kinds of weird and inappropriate pop-ups appeared out of nowhere so I threw my coffee at it. What should I do now?"

Do IT customer service agents really refer to the callers as PEBKACs? Yes, but only the absolute fuckwits we sometimes come across and never to their face.
