St Germain – Tourist (2000)
So this is my first alum recommendation, and I hope at least some of you enjoy it.
I chose this as I wanted to try and find something that was reasonably accessible from a listening point of view and that may be new listen to some.
So I came across this album by accident, I was at a Renaissance Audio in Fareham getting my 300B mono blocks serviced and Graham popped this on and said have a listen to this. I was hooked from the start and just wanted to hear track after track. I go to hear most of it whilst there and when I got home searched out a new copy on Vinyl, re-release in 2012 on Parlophone – 5099963622010 2*180gm LP's.
A bit about St Germain, it is the performance name for Ludovic Navarre.
Quote from Discogs "St Germain is among the leading French masters to have established the 'French Touch': the 'French Traxx EP' and 'Motherland EP', both released in 1993, introduced his style: a mix of deep house, jazz and lounge; sampling and real instruments playing side to side.
The album 'Boulevard' (1995) and the track 'Alabama Blues' (reworked by Todd Edwards at the same period) made St Germain a success worldwide. Five years later, the album 'Tourist' (2000) had an tremendous impact with the famous singles 'Rose Rouge', 'Sure Thing' and 'So Flute'."
I believe Tourist sold over 3 million copies worldwide and presumably is why St Germain did not release 'St Germain' (the 3rd album) until 2015, also a good listen IMO.
It is categorised as Deep House, Future Jazz, Downtempo, I hope this will not put you off, I am certainly not a Deep House fan myself. For me what I find interesting is that whilst the tracks are seemingly simple in musical construction, there is actually quite a lot going on if you listen hard. The tracks are quite varied but all use a combination of sampling, but in a limited way, and real instruments. Some of the samples are taken from famous musicians I will let you find out or try and identify them. Primarily Tracks 1, 2, 4 and 6.
Happy Listening!
