Indeed
I'm on the hunt for before/after measurements of using a earth spike.

Can only think Tony would be your man for that

I believe that grounding regulations have been tightened up so it's dangerous to add a house ground of any kind unless you consult with a qualified sparky. You may find, as I did, that your ground impedance is already low so adding your own grounding rod would achieve little.
The use of grounding boxes for signal ground, though, is a completely different thing.

I forgot that I had posted about this until I saw it in my posting history. There is a update in that I am not using the ground rod anymore. As I said originally it was being used for signal grounding only. However I wanted to see what it would do if it did come into contact with PE. It tripped the consumer unit! So erring on the side of caution it is no longer attached to any kit.

It would only take a very small leakage current between the two.
Noise on the signal ground is a different issue that doesn't need or want the Power Earth to dissipate it. Use a grounding box - the good ones work very well and will drop your noise floor and not cause any safety concerns.

I do believe that today might be Ground Rod day!

I'm pretty sure if you get a multimeter, unplug your kit and probe the earth pin of the plug and any signal ground, you will find continuity. Could be that your mains earth is not very good or creating a ground loop of some kind has helped things.

1. Power Earth can be a very noisy environment 2. Some components have a, for example, 10 ohm resistor between chassis and signal earth to prevent hum
