This is a tricky one for me, there are several contenders.
However, for the sheer majesty and sweep of his progressive rock roots, not to mention his no mean ability at the keyboards and his compositional skills, it has to be Keith Emerson.

The one thing that is common with my favourite bands is they have keyboard player , some give the band their sound eg . Dave Greenfield (The Stranlers) , Ray Manzarek (The Doors) while some write great songs, Tony Banks , Rick Wright so they would be my favourites but the question is the greatest and it comes down to two Wakeman or Emerson , wow how hard is that? I love watching Rick play but I was a huge ELP fan so Keith Emerson it is

Again, there are so many. I can't pick the "best" or the "greatest," because that's purely subjective, but I'll choose the one who's given me the most pleasure over the years. I should add that not all of that pleasure has been derived from his playing; he's also a raconteur par excellence, and a fellow Grumpy Old Man, although the titles of his books say he's a "Grumpy Old Rock Star," which is a claim I can only make in my head.
Rick Wakeman.

It was between him and Keith Emerson for me. I judged by the music, not the skill between them.

Would have to be Jon Lord if I apply the Slinger algorithm.

Would have to be Jon Lord if I apply the Slinger algorithm. Would have to be Nicky Hopkins if it was a purely musical choice.

I shall use the description, "keyboard player" to mean someone in a band, and more specifically a rock band. So that excludes my favourite jazz pianists and a few singer song-writers. I always enjoyed Richard Wright, but in some ways he was too integrated into the overall sound of the group. Tony Banks is up there too. Jools Holland never fails to be enjoyable and I loved Squeeze (even though I'm always surprised one can barely detetct his presence). However, for me one person stands out. From his distinctive contributions to songs by Cat Stevens and David Bowie to his extraordinary performances with Yes. The fabulous "Six Wives" album still holds its own and I can even forgive "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" and almost so, "King Arthur" (but maybe not the 'on ice' show). So there you have it, another vote for Rick Wakeman.
Sorry!
