The 5th symphony is truly a work of art and the 9th is transcendent. IMO of course

Ah, only just spotted this thread.
3 fave violin concerto recordings, is that the idea?
Well - tricky to choose just 3, but for me ...
Shostakovich VC 1 - Erxleben as soloist on Berlin Classics - he really stretches out the slow mvt but it is totally riveting and catastrophically emotional for me.
Sibelius VC with Christian Ferras and Karajan - Ferras does the 'atmosphere' like no other, imo.
Khatchaturian VC with either Igor Oistrakh (mono on MfP LP) or Leonid Kogan (on RCA Living Stereo)

Interesting choices Jerry!
I haven’t heard the Shosta for a long time - think it was Maxim Vengerov who I saw give a masterful performance of this at the Barbican. Not listened to Khatcha for ages either so will revisit both.

Shostakovich VC 1 Sibelius VC Khatchaturian VC The Shossy is truly wonderful and I need to listen to it again. I heard the Sibelius live this year and I'm afraid I simply was not moved at all. The Katchaturian I've never heard, so I'll try finding it on Spotify and will play it tonight when I get home.

OK, so I am a bit of a Sibelius fiend and have been lucky enough to enjoy an amazing performance by Julia Fischer a few years ago ... More recently I heard it with Leonidas Kavakos - not quite as memorable but I love the work so much it was still a pleasure ...

OMG - where and who ?? Oops, it was last year actually (how time flies). Lisa Batiashvili with the BBC SO conducted by Sakari Oramo. No, I'd never heard of them either. Unmemorable, in any case.
