Hi , i'm Jollyfix ( Dave) , i have just come across this forum. I see that there are some people here from another forum, who i have not heard off for ages. Glad to have found you guys again ( Chris, John, Martin etc). I love music of all sorts. Right now im using an old Alchemist Kraken ( mk 1), with a clearaudio deck, Saturn CD player into Duevel Planets. I use other gear ( mf x-150, Rega Brio, Arcam diva 73 ,Chario,KEF,AE ,Musical Technology and some other bits n bobs in bedroom, other room/ home systems. I am happy with my system right now, and although being not that 'hi-end', it hits the spot for me. I am sure at some point i will upgrade some things, but as i have always compared my system to what i have used before rather than what i could be using, i am quite content. Being introduced to new music/ artists is where i its at for me, and i have to say i have missed Chris's choices of music when he posted on AOS.

Hi Dave, Welcome to TAS, it's really great to see you here!
That's a really good place to be - about as good as it gets, in fact. Gosh, kind words about music choices - I have to say that your own taste is impeccable, sir! I hope you like what you see here Dave, Cheers

Hi Jammy, i used to play drums in several bands back in the day... the avatar photo is my dad,he passed away a couple of years ago. He was a brilliant drummer. Worked as a session man for many years, he also played for many Jazz bands. I was so lucky as a child as music would be played in the house all the time. Live and recorded, the musicians who would turn playing all sorts, was very inspiring. Down sides was the smell. Smell of feet, lots of feet. the reason why i stopped going to the BBC studios with him, when he played in a big band all the musicians would have to remove their shoes,as the mics. would pick up the shoe tapping. I still have a bash now and again, but play more harp ( played blues harp for a few bands)

Would love to play an instrument of any kind and despite trying - No use, you've either got it or not.

My apologies for off topic question, but I could not find better way of contacting jollyfix.
I came across your post on theaudiostandard.net website the other day and I have noticed that you are using both Alchemist Kraken and Rega Brio (I am assuming it is not Brio-R). I am using Rega Brio-R at home, but I have just found someone who is selling his Alchemist Kraken. Unfortunately I cannot test both in one room as the seller is in different country...
I was wondering if you could share your opinion on both amplifiers, please. I appreciate that it is often question of personal taste, but I am very interested to find out what your experience with both amplifiers is. Many thanks,

The rega is a brio 2000, the Kraken mk1 ( green hammertone). The rega more in your face, the Kraken more smooth, but detailed. Alchemist states that the Kraken does not like speakers less than 8ohm, but i have never had a problem, i never play at room shaking volume. There is something i just like about the kraken with vocals, it is said that the Kraken sounds like a valve amp . The speakers im using it with right now are 4ohm omni ( duevel planets), they work very well together. I have also used kef ref 1, chario syntar, ae 105 se. The end of the day i like both, but use the Kraken more. Depends of speakers/cable etc, but with the brio i find more of a zing to acoustic/ cymbals, but the kraken all round has it. i listen to all sorts of music, rock to reggae, folk to funk etc. where in the uk are you? www.alchemisthifi.info/ranges/kraken/documents/kraken_mk1_hifiworld_review_p2.htmwww.alchemisthifi.info/ranges/kraken/documents/kraken_apd6_whathifi_dec_92.pdf

I too have a green Kraken, very nice little amp. Looks to be good quality parts used too, from the quick peek I had inside. I suspect it will sound better with speakers that are a fairly easy load. Sounds great on my OB's, though it has an easy life as it only handles 200hz up.

Thank you for all your answers. I think I'll take a risk and buy the Kraken to test it at home. The one I am going to buy is apd6 mkii. The sonic characteristics of Kraken you described, i.e. smooth and detailed, is something am I looking for.
