"NASA has selected SpaceX to land the first astronauts on the surface of the Moon since 1972, the agency said Friday, in a huge victory for Elon Musk's company. "SpaceX beats out Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and defense contractor Dynetics to be the sole provider for the system, a surprising break from the past when NASA has chosen multiple companies in case one fails. "Under the Artemis program to return humans to the Moon, NASA wants to use its Space Launch System rocket to launch four astronauts on board an Orion crew capsule, which will then dock with a lunar space station called Gateway. SpaceX's Starship will be waiting to receive two crew members for the final leg of the journey to the surface of the Moon." The contract is worth 2.9 billion dollars. "Prototypes of the vessel are currently being put through their paces at the company's south Texas facility, though all four versions that have so far attempted test flights have exploded." ... That is one big rocket to actually be the lander. This project looks thoroughly exciting. Long term occupation of the Moon? It's definitely the next step.

A great Elon Musk quote from the last day or so....
"Look, I know I sometimes say or post strange things, but that's just how my brain works," he said.
"To anyone who's been offended, I just want to say I reinvented electric cars, and I'm sending people to Mars in a rocket ship. Did you think I was also going to be a chill, normal dude?"

He has, apparently, just hosted Saturday Night Live, during which he announced that he was "the first person with Asperger's" to host the show. Mind you, he could just as easily retract that statement tomorrow, or attempt to pass it off as a joke, you never know with him.

I must admit to quite liking the guy from what I have seen and read. I always think he is like a benign Bond villain: I mean, who happens to have a miniature submarine they'd developed just lying round?!

As somebody pointed out on Twitter yesterday, "If two billionaires are locked in a personal battle to see who can get into space first it's probably a sign that neither of them is paying nearly enough tax".
