OK, I admit it, I'm a bit dim sometimes in seeing what is probably patently obvious to other people. TAS seems to be experiencing a whole bunch of posts with .... taking a prominent role. I'm sure I've done it myself. Nudge nudge, say no more, you know what I mean, eh! Well, umm, actually I often don't! If it's worth saying, then say the damn thing!

I expect that I am a major culprit in this Jerry. Noted and apologies.

Of course, if it's just a question of the number of dots, the number in the thread title is far more than the accepted convention. The conventional number is adequate, in my opinion. Just saying...

I was just going to make this^ point - anything more than three dots is grating, but I've no problem with a well formed ellipsis.

I have been severely told off by my 21 year daughter for using them in texts. So I don't...to her.

I'm not sure residents of NZ are all shoe makers or repairers, or are a dish consisting of a fruit or savoury filling poured into a large baking dish and covered with a batter, biscuit, or dumpling.

An ellipsis can say so many things... Exactly. So how the hell are we supposed to know which of the so many things are actually meant? Do you think we are psychic or something? Let your yea be yea, and your nay be nay.

It's... like... called... an ellipsis? It traditionally, (and correctly, as I was taught) consists of 3 "dots." Not two, not twelve, like Trump appears to think, just three. I use an ellipsis to either... signify a pause, or to direct the reader to draw their on conclusions, or do I..? (That was my "variation-on-a-theme-ellipsis").
According to Wikipedia (so it must be true) it usually indicates an intentional omission of a word, sentence, or whole section from a text without altering its original meaning. Depending on their context and placement in a sentence, ellipses can indicate an unfinished thought, a leading statement, a slight pause, an echoing voice, or a nervous or awkward silence. Aposiopesis is the use of an ellipsis to trail off into silence—for example: "But I thought he was …" When placed at the beginning or end of a sentence, the ellipsis can also inspire a feeling of melancholy or longing.

It's weird, I've a feeling of deja vu about that post. A definite feeling I've seen it before somewhere ...
