It's said (although the quote varies slightly) that any society is "three square meals away from anarchy". We may be about to find out how true that actually is.

Not difficult to visualise when you see people stocking up with 10 times more than they need for the one or two days the shops are closed over Christmas
The worrying thing is the supply chain emptying and causing more stupidity. Look out for the toilet roll riots of 2020

I'm beginning to wonder what I'm actually going to get, or NOT get, in my Sainsbury's order this afternoon. Normal practice is to send the customer, i.e. me, an email on the morning of delivery detailing any enforced changes, substitutions, etc. My delivery is due between 15:00 and 16:00, it's now 14:00, and no email. Is the news so bad that they're too embarrassed to email me? [EDIT] I got my email, and it's shite! You ordered: Coffee Mate Coffee Whitener 500g 1 → We're delivering: Nescafé Original Instant Coffee 100g 1 You ordered: Davidstow Cornish Mature Cheddar Cheese 350g 1 → We're delivering: Pilgrims Choice Vintage Cheddar Cheese 300g 1 You ordered: House 247 Superior Toilet Tissue 3 Ply 18 Rolls 1 → No suitable alternative was available
You ordered: Hula Hoops BBQ Beef Potato Ring Crisps 6x24g 1 → No suitable alternative was available
You ordered: Hula Hoops Original Potato Ring Crisps 6x24g 1 → No suitable alternative was available
You ordered: Kellogg's Special K Dark Chocolate Chewy 4x24g 2 → We're delivering: Kellogg's Special K Milk Chocolate Chewy 4x24g 2 You ordered: Knorr Stock Pot Vegetable 4x28g 1 → We're delivering: Kallo Organic Vegetable Stock Pots 4x24g 1 You ordered: Paul Hollywood Ready to Bake Multi-Seed Rolls x4 1 → No suitable alternative was available
You ordered: Pom-Bear Original Potato Snack 6x15g 2 → We're delivering: Walkers Salt & Shake Crisps 6x24g 1 You ordered: Sainsbury's Butterlicious Spread 500g 1 → We're delivering: Clover Spread 1kg 1 You ordered: Sainsbury's Classic Crust Veggie Delight Pizza 500g 1 → No suitable alternative was available
You ordered: Sainsbury's Dried Yellow Split Peas 500g 1 → We're delivering: Sainsbury's Split Green Peas 500g 1 You ordered: Sainsbury's Fruity Hot Cross Buns, Taste the Difference x4 280g 1 → We're delivering: Sainsbury's Triple Berry Hot Cross Buns Taste the Difference x4 280g 1 You ordered: Sainsbury's Onion, Carrot & Celery 400g 1 → No suitable alternative was available
You ordered: Sainsbury's Pork & Egg Gala Slices x2 250g 1 → No suitable alternative was available
You ordered: Sainsbury's Special Fried Rice 400g (Serves 2) 1 → We're delivering: Sainsbury's Egg Fried Rice 400g (Serves 2) 1 You ordered: Warburtons Crumpets x9 2 → We're delivering: Warburtons Crumpets x6 2 So, that's the stuff I'd ordered to make soup with - 2 days dinner - not available, tonight's dinner (Pizza) not available. Coffee instead of coffee whitener, no toilet rolls, no bread rolls, which is OK, because they were to go with the soup I can't now make, no Gala pie, no Hula Hoops, and no "Pom-Bear" snacks which I was buying for my mum, and I'm 6 crumpets short.

I've got a reasonably well-stocked freezer, and tins of soup and such, Tim, thanks for asking. At least I've got some bread this week, which I didn't get last week. If desperation sets in I can always get a cab to the shops and buy whatever they actually do have in stock. I'm just loath to add £12-£15 in cab fares to my weekly £50-£60 shopping bill, especially as I'm already paying a premium for deliveries.

Well best wishes fella, it is what it I guess - welcome to the new normal, at least probably for the next 12 months. Hopefully shopping trends will level off over days not weeks, then we just need to tackle the bastard virus itself, which is at least a year away from most scientific estimates. I'm not planning on seeing much live music this year now, most of the artists I follow are from the US and it's going to be awhile before they start European tours again, they'll be staying at home. Been looking at tour cancellations by the bucket load today from people I follow.
The curve is still very much in ascendancy

The curve is still very much in ascendancy Thanks, Tim, same to you, in fact... same to everyone. I heard earlier that Trump is going to extend his travel ban to include the UK and Ireland by Monday, but I haven't seen it confirmed.

It's just been confirmed by the BBC.
US extends travel ban to UK and Ireland from Monday – vice-president
US vice-president Mike Pence has confirmed the ban on travel from the UK and Ireland will be suspended from midnight Monday EST.
He said: “In our taskforce meeting today the president has made a decision to suspend all travel to the UK and Ireland, effective midnight Monday night, eastern standard time.”
Mr Pence said there had been a “unanimous recommendation” from health experts to extend the travel ban.
“Americans in the UK or Ireland can come home, legal residents can come home ... they will will be funnelled through specific airports and processed.”

Bizarrely this could be just what we need to slow down climate change. Not quite the ideal route of course

Bizarrely this could be just what we need to slow down climate change. Not quite the ideal route of course Let's start a conspiracy theory that the virus was engineered by Greta Thunberg .... huge drop in Chinese pollution emissions, international air travel greatly reducing, and it bumps off the elderly while leaving the young unharmed ... hmmm .... .... seems legit to me.

Our Sainsburys is a touch empty on staples, but nowhere near the devastation of the Tesco shown above.
We even managed to get some bread today. Otherwise, we'll make do with what we have.

There are so many different conspiracy theories out there including either China or Russian scientists creating it. Nobody really knows and probably never will.

I decided to buy a box of the Quaker Oats cereal packets. There are 50 in the box. I tend to have oats instead of bread on some days. But we also have flour. And with that we can make roti, bread, or bakes ( West Indian kind of bread roll that is actually fried in oil).

"The Beer Game" is a good guide to what panic buying is doing There are games available to demonstrate how difficult it is to manage availability of everyday items. Very simple version : Popular cult band says how wonderful Wonder Beer is. Very small market so little in stock anywhere. Interested fans buy all there is and the shops run out Fans back order at one shop then others Shops back order, wholesalers back order Manufacturer has months worth of orders and works madly to supply. As soon as stocks are replenished most orders evaporate Hopefully there will come a time soon when all the lunatics with 6 months supply of items stop buying, the supply chain replenishes and happy bunnies everywhere. Added complication is workers at the manufacturing plant go off sick How soon might this happen ....... ?
