I grew up listening to Metal in the 80's and so whilst I knew who ZZ Top were, thanks to the Eliminator album which was everywhere, they were never really on my radar as a band to explore. I confess to remaining pretty ignorant about them until yesterday when the Mrs started watching this entertaining and enlightening Netflix doco about them - 'That Little 'Ol Band From Texas'. Amazing - 50 Years with the same line up and still kicking it live and in the studio; I had no idea quite what talented musicians they are, just awesome playing with such a distinctive raw sound and one of the fattest bass tones I've ever heard.

A friend at work taped me their first 3 albums, which he'd been sent by a friend in the States. They started out a lot bluesier them they are these days. I've used some of Dunlop's "Reverend Willy" branded Extra-light strings and medium picks on occasion, too.

An excellent band that went through 3 (?) distinct phases
I was wowed when I saw them on The Tube, probably in the 80s
My favourites Rhythmeen XXX Mescalero
Sharp Dressed Man is a classic

I prefer their bluesier stuff and the first album is pretty hard to beat.
But this track is the best thing they ever did.
"I finally found my aubergine" Check out the Moving Sidewalks album 'Flash' too.

They started out a lot bluesier them they are these days. This album from 2012 seems to embrace a lot of their past - certainly a world away from their 80’s sound -

They played at the Marquee as The Little Old Band from Texas back in the early 80s

I missed it, Chris, I could have gone, but I was not really into the band at the time. I regretted it later!

We didn't know who was playing that night. We were in town buying tickets for something at the Odeon and just turned up at the Marquee.

Excellent band. I particularly like Afterburner, Eliminator and Recycler.

I knew they were playing as used to go the Marquee quite regularly, but all I knew was Eliminator and that was too poppy for me.

Hmm, you know, this isn't too bad at all! I had no idea ZZ Top made ths kind of music, I had them pigeon-holed as Pop Crap for some reason. Probably the name ZZ Top to blame for that.

That's why I really recommend the documentary if you have access to Netflix - it's pretty much all about the earlier years and there's lots of great footage from that era ...

I love ZZ Top and my first exposure to them was around the release of Cheap Sunglasses , I had a friend who worked the door at Eric,s club George and often after work would wander down and see who was playing as i got in for nothing . George said this group tonight were really good having been there for the soundcheck so went in and stood at the back . Erics was not a big place and even at the very back you had a great view . ZZ Top cam out and started the first number and the sound was loud and induced shaking of the air in your chest . By about the fifth number they had warmed up and the walls had started to sweat . Fantastic concert with quite a decent crowd who seemed to love them . Went out and bought that LP and have bought pretty much all of their albums since .
