Hi Jules, Since you only want it for playback, rather than recording duties, you needn't worry about certain features (e.g. bias fine tune), and a nice two-header should do the job. For something that goes for very little money, but is capable of performing very well, I'd recommend the Aurex PC-E70 - I've had the pleasure of listening to a restored one of these quite recently, and it's very good. However - given their advanced years - any deck you get will most likely need a proper service before it will perform as intended - mechanical/electrical alignment, etc. - and this is where things become somewhat more expensive. I'd second Strat's recommendation of contacting Alex Nitikin - he's brilliant.

Thanks Strat and Pinch - I've now dropped a line to Alex ...
That Aurex deck would do the job nicely if I could find one in good knick. I've mainly been looking at decent quality two-headers so far and yes, I'm probably being naive thinking I might get away with not spending any further money on one, but you never know!

I once had a nice Aurex tuner, picked up from Richer Sounds when they used to stack gear in piles everywhere, before they became posh. Aurex were part of Toshiba, if I remember correctly?

Yes I believe so. I was unaware of the brand until I encountered the deck mention above (too young at the time), but it seems they made some very nice decks which - at least for playback - can rival the comparable Naks which now go for several times the price, though the Naks have their own charms of course.

I have a Technics 605 and it was the first deck I got that I was happy with. It just didn't sound like a cassette deck as my previous Akai an Yamaha had done.
Technics models quite often got a good write-up from Noel Keyword.

I never finished off this story. After various false starts, I ended up with an absolute beauty and here she is … It’s an Onkyo Integra TA-6711. Not only does she look the business but the sound, even from my old recordings is most impressive indeed. Very quiet backgrounds and excellent dynamic range. Build quality and controls just ooze class ... It's very tactile and the open / mechanism is an absolute joy to use. I’m not making recordings, but would like to try for the fun of it sometime as it does have some rather nice facilities - 3 heads, Dolby B / C / HX Pro etc and the auto ‘accubias’ setting. It’s also in near mint condition. Back in 1996 this would have cost $850!! I was lucky enough to bag it for around £80 on ebay …

I have a Nakamichi CR-2E which is in excellent condition and working perfectly and has had light overall use. It is properly boxed with original manual. Available for £50 plus postage. Sale includes several unused good quality cassettes and a load of once only self recorded tapes and several commercially recorded ones if a buyer is interested.
Just PM me.

I'm looking to buy a cheap cassette deck, as far under 100 quid as poss, to play fairly poorly recorded old tapes that have a lot of nostalgia value for me. Really not sure what to buy so could do with some suggestions from those of you who know this format better than me! I have a few criteria. Would ideally be silver or champagne finish, but black ok if wins out in other areas. Nice VU meters a bonus. Must be full working order, nice cosmetically, and reliable. Can't be one of the big old retro decks as I won't get it on my rack sadly - max 13cm high. I'd also like something a bit interesting to look at - the budget Denons are meant to be good decks but look so deathly dull! This Aiwa is beyond my budget but is the kind of look that would appeal - The Pioneer 4040 is gorgeous.
So is the Sony 209.

You must have proper Moving Coil VU meters on your machines
As for the Aurex cassette decks the only two i would have considered were the 'PC-4280' & 'PC-6030'
