Good morrow fellow forumites. I did join here before but my account got lost in the abyss. Known as "istari_knight" pretty much everywhere else but I fancied a change. No need to say hello again, you did that already when I joined the first time 'round.

Just popped back after an 18 month hiatus, good to see you're all still enjoying yourselves After doing some serious self reflection I found hifi had become a destructive hobby so gave it up... Including fora. Turned out to be one of my better decisions. Not sure why I popped in but I'm here so hello chaps! I won't be an active member like I used to but will try to drop in every now & then and say hi. James.

James, man. James, ya cannot do that, man. Just Sunday gone I I tried Googling to see if you had been posting anywhere, but the last I could find was Pinko.
Not sure about your thoughts about the hobby being destructive. Might you like to expand on that? Of course you might not want to.
Anyway, nice to see you back. Hope you might think about sticking around. I'm sure many would value your knowledge and experience.

Hey James, no sweat and just pop in when you feel like it. Don't feel obligated to do anything.
Anyway, it's nice to say hello again!

Thanks chaps Mr Whippy The hobby isn't destructive in itself but when the hobby becomes an obsession then it becomes destructive. Its odd as I'm not normally an OCD kind of guy, I certainly dont have an addictive personality and yet I let stereo equipment rule my life for a few years, it was pretty much all I thought about... In the end I couldn't even enjoy listening to what i had, I would be on the laptop *whilst listening* looking for the next 5 minute wonder... All day long. Possibly not an issue if you're retired, a bachelor or both but I'm not far off turning 30 and decided I really ought to be out enjoying my life, not to mention being there for my nearest and dearest. That said, I still enjoy listening to music and am very pleased to tell you chaps that initially when you go from decent equipment to a portable radio and budget headphones it hurts, it hurts like hell. You feel you cant enjoy listening to anything because it sounds so inferior... But dont panic! Given a few months your aural memory resets and everything sounds great no matter what the source

I went through a similar phase not quite as intense as yours James where I started to end up just listening for those small changes and it got in the way of enjoying the music. It took a few weeks to reset myself once I identified what I was doing

Agreed, an occasional check that you're still enjoying the music is worth doing.
