Gosh, you are hearing much larger differences between USB cables than me. It could be that the Mutec reclocker is reducing the differences between cables. Even the shit one that came with the Mutec didn't sound bad!

I've just A/B'd the leads with Robbie Robertson's "Somewhere Down The Crazy River" and the Oyaide definitely presents the sound far more musically. I'll put the JuicEBitz back though and see if it "warms up" over the next day or so.

One thing I keep forgetting to mention: Volumio happily identifies my "Output Device" as a HU300 HiFi 2.0 which is referencing the HU300 chip in the DACs XMOS USB interface.

Yes, it identifies mine as 'MC-3+ Smart Clock USB 2.0'.

The good thing about USB signal cables is that they usually burn in just by leaving them in place, as there is always a null stream (my Mutec's lock light comes on the moment it's connected to the Asus without any music). I am pretty sure that the Mutec is a bit of a cable leveller because of its incredible reclocking and noise reduction circuits. Nevertheless, the bog standard 1.5m USB freebie cable sounded fine, the 0.5m JuiceBitz sounded better and the 0.75m AudioQuest Carbon sounds best of all.

I'm still interested in trying a USB cable between the ATB and DAC with the power pins disabled. I'm 99% certain it won't work, but that 1% still wants me to try. I'll probably wait until I've played around with the selection of Chinese USB cables I've got coming before I decide which lead to butcher though.

Why not buy a plug/socket pair and solder through the pins except power, negating the need to butcher a cable for experimentation?

I've got one of these (a USB isolator)... ...on the way, so I may use it to disconnect the power, depending on what effect it may have on the system, if any.

On the plus side, if it doesn't work then you'll have confirmed that the DAC draws power for its USB interface from the USB 5v, and in which case you'll be able to play with feeding it something cleaner (I might be able to dig out some bits you could use to experiment with this).

You have to remove the CPU heatsink, John.

Yes. Remove it carefully using a credit card or something plastic.

Interesting to see that you're trying this too, John. Do you still have your sotm streamer?

Of course - I followed your move to the Limetree with interest! But did you move the sotm on?

I think I may have just rendered the 3 Chinese USB cables currently winging their way towards me irrelevant. I've managed to pick up a 0.75m AudioQuest Carbon USB A to B lead for less than the cost of a similar length Cinnamon. The reason I say "may have" is partly because the seller has been a member since 2014 and has zero feedback. What the Hell, I'm covered by eBay/PayPal. I also have an open case with the seller of the USB isolator I mentioned in this thread. It's two days overdue and the tracking number is fake. Oh, and it looks very much like it's supposed to be coming from China, as opposed to London, which the listing stated. It was less than a fiver and I didn't bother looking at the sellers feedback prior to purchase. These two situations are what probably counts as " living on the edge" at my age, so there is an upside.
