Yaaaaaaaaay! The Oehlbach's bach... I mean back. Good news, I've just bunged it in and music is playing, it's not hot, and has a nice blue LED this time.
The chain is currently ATB-->Oehlbach-->Schiit Wyrd-->DAC The USB cables from ATB to Wyrd are both Wireworld Starlight 7, with an AQ Carbon between the Wyrd and the DAC
The 2011 remaster of Animals is sounding pretty decent at first blush, perhaps a bit "clinical" but that might just be me. No more pronouncements until I've given it a sound thrashing i.e. thrashed it with sound.
FWIW I've also removed the AQ Jitterbug. I can always bugger about with that once te main components have settled down and got to know each other.

Adding the jitterbug might help with the clinical sound you hearing and it also might be a bit of burn-in is needed.

Give it time to burn in before making changes. I'd leave the Jitterbug out until you get to know the new system sound.

I'd say that everything probably hasn't finished "gelling" yet, and I've got more changes to make re speaker cable, supports, a sacrifice to Apollo, God of music... etc. But I'd say that the Oehlbach has brought a bit more *clarity* to the music, without making it sound antiseptic, or bland in any way. It's giving me more music, which is the ultimate goal.

I've bought the cheapest possible Chinese USB plugin decrappifier.
With the quality of the D70 and the Oehlbach I'm not expecting anything so anything more than nothing will be a bonus.

Keep your eyes open for a used Schiit Wyrd, Jules. I'm convinced it's working in concert with the Oehlbach to give me the sound I'm getting, and as it looks like I'm using a D70 clone I'd expect it to perform for your setup too. I paid fifty quid for mine, which is about half list price iirc.

I'm trying to avoid more boxes now Paul and keep it simple.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that my signal can't be further decrappified, but I will be more than happy to be proved wrong!
What speaker cable are you looking at? The specific model of course as I already know the brand LOL.

Those of us using the Asus Tinker Board S know how good the Primo should be, as it's an Asus with DAC.

I've just found out, courtesy of Fretless over at HFS, that the Schiit Wyrd is out of production, and will remain so. If you want one keep an eye on the "used" market because it's the only way you'll get one now. I'm happy that mine is acting positively on my second system and for the price I'd say it's a worthwhile experiment for anyone running a Pi or ATB streamer. The Schiit Eitr has been killed off too.

Hans on 'Network Switches' - I lost the will to live after 5 mins or so but some might find this interesting. Skip the first two minutes in which he indulges in a rambling 'car reviewer' analogy!!

Encouraged by positive results reported in a thread at HFS I've just ordered a "proper" 8-way switch, a Cisco Catalyst 2960G-8TC-L Apparently, there is also a good thread about switches on SteteoNet. What you can't see from that pic is that it's mains-powered so no wall-wart/Chinese PSU. It's also " configurable" but apparently sounds good even without configuration, which is the way many people are running them. Another suggestion (from Nick/Lurcher) is to run a separate network just for the audio traffic, but that is something I probably won't attempt, especially as there are some configuration problems when using W10 it's been reported and I don't have the requisite leads or drivers. This model of switch was last manufactured in 2013, and Cisco ceased supporting them in 2018, consequently it cost me £49.95 including delivery. It's a pity I only bought a new 8 port switch in January.

Is the idea behind using one of these that, where a switch is necessary, it's possible for it to affect the sound and so worth getting a good one? Or, is there an argument for putting a switch in between the router and the streamer even if there'd otherwise be no need to have one? For example, my router and streamer are directly connected by a single longish ethernet cable - there's no switch in the data path; is there any reason to insert one?

I use an 8-port switch anyway so the thinking is: the better the switch the less *crap* will get into my music signal. I'd say the best switch is no switch at all though.

My entire 4G router is dedicated to music streaming, so no additional switch required. It also has a linear power supply and a grounding box.
