So, who can identify the hifi gear seen in this photo of Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich? Must have been taken in the early 1970s in Moscow.

I'm guessing a Japanese receiver, something like a Sanyo/Sansui/Yamaha/Sony/Trio/Pioneer!

I'm not sure Dmitri would have had access to Japanese kit in the early 1970s?
Mind you, it looks a lot better than Soviet styling of the time.

The press-levers on the front remind me of those on my old Marantz cassette deck from that sort of era - I think there's a cassette load tray on the left.
But three what look like meters is a bit odd?

It could be a receiver, in which case tuning and signal strength would be two of them. Multipath for the third?

I think it is a tape deck possibly - if it was a receiver surely it would have a long display for tuning?

Yes looks more like a tape deck to me. Maybe a Marantz?

The three meters are probably #1: Dynamic Level/Bias - dB% #2: Left - dB #3: Right - dB
The Pioneer CT-F700 had them, but it's not one of those.

Could be. By the way, quite a few tuners at the time used a meter for its frequency dial.

I do believe that is a Panasonic quadrophonic receiver you've got there Jerry. I wouldn't have a clue of the model number, but it would be an RE-something or other.

The three panels are AM tuning, FM tuning and the one over on the right is the display for a 4 way balance control, steered by a little joystick below it.

Oops! Missed out one vital bit of info:
I do believe that is a Panasonic quadrophonic receiver with 8-track player you've got there Jerry. I wouldn't have a clue of the model number, but it would be an RE-something or other.

I acquired from my dad an 8-track receiver from JVC when I was a teenager. I had about 10 cartridges to play in it.

The photo in the OP makes it look a bit taller, but I'm certain that's the model.

So Jules and I weren’t too far off. It was 8 track rather than cassette tape.

I believe it's a cardboard box, Martin, made to look a bit like a playhouse.
