One thing i do believe is a lot of people listen to the shit out these days clearly because they are un educated regarding older music. If its not past commercial they have no idea.

People listen to what they know, what they hear and what others listen to. It has always been the case. One of the things we at TAS can do is to educate them on all the wonderful music that came before. The best that we can do is give them an idea. I still remember the day that I play Hendrix to my son. We nee more of that for his children's generation.

You are so right there, Andr’e. Whilst I pride myself with my eclectic taste in music, I have still found a lot more music options since joining Hifi forums and meeting fellow music and Hifi enthusiasts.

That's been very much the case for me, too. The only radio in recent times that has expanded my interest is Radio Paradise.
National broadcast radio for music is a joke.

I'm not sure anyone dictates anything, do they? With a radio staion, someone has to make decisions as to what to play. They choose what they think their audience will like. How they come to those decisions is another matter, I suppose. Let's face it, most contemporary music is fluff that we wouldn't be seen dead listening to, but that has always been the case.

Well exactly, and appealing to their audience is another way of saying that most music is wallpaper music and you have to dig a little deeper to get to the good stuff.

I rarely listen to the radio, but wifey likes Magic, so we listen to that in the car.

What as in Commercialism, Radio etc dictating to people that this is what should be listen to? Most people just don't care. Mix that in with money driven people and companies and that gets us what we got. BBC6 is pretty good

Music really isn't that important to what, 80% of humanity ? I would put that at 99% or above Mike. 5 billion people on the planet don't have a flushing toilet, so they sure as buggery aren't going to have a Hi-Fi or music player - they have to make their own. The greater majority of humanity worries about what they are going to eat on a daily basis. I sometimes have to pinch myself to realise just how lucky I/we are. On a global scale we are all very rich.

National broadcast radio for music is a joke. That's a bit harsh Martin, 6Music isn't bad and there are shows on Radio2 and BBC Radio Scotland (Bob Harris and Ricky Ross) that I consider exemplary and neither play what most here would consider mainstream. I doubt you would like it, but it's still niche and for music lovers of a certain kind.

I listen to Radio 2 sometimes but rarely hear music that I would choose to listen to. The others I can't get on FM in the car.
