As Slayer go on a victory lap with their final ever tour, I thought we would take a look back with them at their Satanic peak. South of Heaven is their fourth studio album from '88, produced by Rick Rubin, and is a charming little palate cleanser that will have some running for cover I'm sure. It contains my two favourite Slayer tracks, the immortal title track and Spill the Blood. Turn it up till it's very loud and then make it *uncomfortably* loud. The world is awash with all kinds of metal bands nowadays but you have to remember how utterly uncompromising and hardcore the band was back in the day, with little competition for being the hardest and heaviest thrashers of the day. The pace was slowed down on this album after the all-out frenetic onslaught of Reign in Blood, but it still packs a mighty punch.

So, this is what " light and Summery" sounds like in your world then, Jules?

I'll give it my best shot...
It's in 24/192 on Qobuz.

It has been many years since I listened to Slayer and at the time they were too hardcore for me. But I will come back to this with fresh ears and see if my taste has changed

I'd much rather listen to this L-O-L, I can see the correlation, but did you manage to listen to any of the album??

L-O-L, I can see the correlation, but did you manage to listen to any of the album?? Unfortunately for me, yes I did I disliked it intensely when I first heard it all those years ago, and hearing some of it again hasn't changed my opinion at all.

I'm sorry Jules - too one-paced, too loud, completely lacking in musical subtlety, and boring to boot I'm afraid. On a positive note though, only 36 minutes long.

One paced? Nah guv, you've got plenty of thrash and slower tracks. But it's deliberately slower and moodier than previous efforts. Too loud?? All men play on 10 Paul, you should know that. Subtlety? It's about as subtle as a sledgehammer and so it should be, that's not to say it isn't inventive in parts which is why it was so successful; but if you think it's boring there's nowt I can say! I've voted now to make sure there's at least one positive review!

Will give it a go, Jules, but not looking forward to it as I’ve always found Slayer to be a bit too much.

I did give the Ushers free rein and I will say that it's well recorded and sounds good in hi-res.
Musically, though, I shuddered as soon as I heard the sound signature of every thrash metal group style lead guitar. I had hoped for Black Sabbath subtlety and inventiveness, but I'm afraid I just didn't hear it. Sorry to say that I tired of it quickly.
I'll give it a 3 on your reverse scale.

I come to this innocent of previous experience and opinion, even awareness.
Listening to the title track - nice extended intro, I was expecting Chris's pneumatic drill onslaught to start now. Nowhere to be heard. It sounds quite entertaining to me, silly lyrics but, hey, I guess we were all young and daft once. I'm old and daft now, maybe that helps. "Mostly harmless", quite fun, actually - coming to the end of the 5th track now and still enjoying it.
I am playing the correct album, I hope. Val Doonican's Greatest Hits, right?
Ah, no, it is Slayer.
Yeah, it's OK. I'm not entirely sure what 'sick' means in today's youth culture, but 2nd down from the top on a scale of 4 sounds about right for me.

I like heavy rock, but this all sounded samey, hard work ( playing wise ) and forced, in fact on first listen it sounded like a bunch of kids trying to do 'heavy' for their school concert.
Not for this rocker, sorry.

Nice pick - I do enjoy a bit of thrash. Will sit down and listen to album in full a little later.
In the meantime, I thought Jules might enjoy this nod to Live Undead (just in case anyone felt there wasn't quite enough pneumatic drill):

Sorry but how can anyone like this?
It is shockingly bad, no music there, just noise! I've given it a generous 4.
