Intel have screwed things with the core count. They make 'pretend' i7 CPUs with only dual cores and hyperthreading (as in my Surface Pro and BRIX). They also make a quad core i3, I believe. Admittedly both of my machines are fast, but you can't go by core count any more.

Haven't kept up with PC tech. Vaguely remember dual core coming in and a mention of quad core. Hyperthreading rings a vague bell Looking around for a speed guide gives too much info and not enough

Don't get caught up in it. Even a lowly older i5 is plenty of CPU power. RAM is more important and SSD the most important parameter.

Thanks both. Got it. Was straying into dangerous territory and thinking of doing a SSD upgrade ala MartinT speedysteveLoads new ones on Ebay at daft prices. Also need a RAM upgrade if the SSD doesn't seem to do it
