Idea to fix the broken world of online debateWhat are the rules? Explain your reasoning, challenge the proposition, but don't be rude or hostile. Original posters are required to engage and to truly consider counter-arguments. Too reasonable for Hifi ?

There's a big difference between having a reasoned debate with a difference of opinion and, say, criticising a book that you've never read (typical of online behaviour).
I'm all for healthy debate in this forum.

I often think "case closed" - Tried the thing and it works
Answers, even reasonable
Tried the thing and it doesn't work (oh !?)
Tried the thing, thought it worked, took it away and it doesn't make an difference now (really ?)
Then there is all the unreasonable which would be lovely to lose

I'd like to see a limit either to the number of posts on a single thread, or maybe a time limit. It seems to me that threads that go on and on pretty easily can degenerate into slanging matches, or go miles away from the original subject.
(this applies to all the hifi fora, this one is generally well behaved..)

I'm not sure that mechanism exists, and there are some threads (like What are you playing right now...) that are endless in nature.
To be honest, it's down to two things: 1) how well the forum is moderated and 2) the make-up and nature of the members.

Look at the "Trump" thread that I started as a joke poll on 1 Aug 2016. 144 pages on, and it's still going. Admittedly, the vast majority of the posts are mine these days, but it still gets read, and hopefully enjoyed.
