I'm avoiding one like the plague. All I need is a smart meter injecting crap down the mains that I try so hard to clean. When we switched over to our new electricity supplier, they said we had to have a Smart Meter and turned up one day to install one. I had checked my contract and at no point did it say I had to have one, so I just turned them away. They did say that apparently it will become a mandatory requirement for all UK homes by a certain date, which has slipped my mind though. I'll wait until then! Think I saw that we will all have to have one, eventually. Long time ago

If what Paul says is true, then a smart meter running over 4G is not so bad, albeit still annoying as it's bound to inject some SMPS noise in at the point of entry into the house.

Unless it's a 2nd generation one even the chief advisor to the gov said on Moneybox live, "don't bother"..

British Gas have just reinforced my decision to get a Smart Meter.
A brief synopsis of my DD rates over the last 12 months.
- £129.00 - £98.00 - £20.00 - £104.00
Today I received a "Your energy statement is ready," email. I logged on to my account, just to make sure the new rate of £104.00 I'd set for my DD, 3 days ago, had registered with them, and on page one I found this...
"We’ve reviewed your account to check your payments are covering your gas and electricity use. Your payments have been changed from £20.00 to £62.13 a month. You are in credit by £183.27. That would be the same £183.27 they paid into my bank account four days ago then?
On double-checking I found that the "letter" received in the email this morning was actually dated 3 days ago.
I cannot get that Smart Meter quickly enough.

Jeez, nPower are much better at smoothing the payment peaks and troughs than that. They barely make an adjustment per year to the DD amount and that suits me fine. They also have a decent Android app for me to check usage and payments, and it shows a forecast curve, too.

We/I never had any problems for years, it's only since I had to switch bank accounts that all of this bollox has happened.

British Gas are shockingly shite, we used to use them but we also found our monthly bills going up and down like a yo yo and with little or no logic reason or explanation as to why.

I would skip to no.2 unless their customer feedback has changed totally

I'm not paying a penny more for the same stuff the grid generates. Their customer service has been impeccable for us so far.

The man with the meters should be here sometime after 13:00 to fit them. Buggered my back clearing space for him in the Tardis, or to give it its proper name, "the cupboard under the stairs." Currently nursing my back, a strong coffee, and making the most of my internet connectivity before I lose power for a couple of hours.
Bugger!
Just remembered I need to shut down my two NASs cleanly, and my Pi/Volumio I suppose.
[EDIT]Just got a 15-minute-warning phone call from "Marcus" my engineer. So much for the quiet cup of coffee.

Good luck, Paul - mind, you probably won't be able to read this for about 2 weeks!

We'll send you a message down the smart meter if you don't return...

If it's British Gas don't you just need to light the blue touch-paper?!

Ha-ha-ha! Power back on, internet restored (obviously) and now he's sorting out the gas. "Marcus" turned out to be a very nice chap. He's a remain voter who used to play bass and sing(?) in a metal band. Unless he blows something up while he's sorting the gas meter out I think I'm home and dry.

Now wait for the smart meter to show you've spent £99999E+22 in this quarter.
