The AKM chip-set is very natural and fluidic with plenty of even handed detail. Always had a soft spot for the AKM dac's Sorry, chief. They'll sound like shit. Never bothered listening to one, but I've seen pictures and there's no diamonds on them, or laser-etched platinum nameplates, and they don't come in milled, unobtanium, presentation cases. Mine's got a lot more noughts after the pound sign and it sounds much better.

Guys I just want to share my journey with the DAC It not a hyper-expensive DAC and I am feeling frustrated that at present I am not able to enjoy the unit

I guess you have it hand, John, but have you thought about using a usb/spdif converter between it and the sotm? This might resolve the compatibility problem.

I could buy a Topping to listen to, I did buy an LKS but preferred my LAB12 DAC which costs slightly more, no more zeros on the end though. At the moment I don't have time to fanny about listening to DAC's but good luck John, hope the Topping does the business for you. You should all join the facebook group called "Audioshite" run by Colin Dent, its all about getting the best sound for as little money as possible, in the end that's what its all about.

We'll get some good sounds from it on Saturday, John.

Having been though a fair few DACs in my time (okay, not so recently as I'm sticking with Najda), I've found implementation to be as important as chipset! Depending on who's designing and marking up, that can cost the extra noughts or not How much would 4 of cost John? I've always fancied trying Najda's output into other DACs but needing 4 of would get kinda expensive with ££££'s DACs.. I suppose one way would be to have a Dac love-in! Invite you guys over. Bring a Dac instead of bottle and then we could plug them all in and see what gives.. could even rotate them on the channels to see what works best where. Anyway, enough of high-jacking here.. I'll ponder.. Edit.. Ah 4 different DACs would probably not work as timing would be out. So we'd need 4 X D70. Plus it would put extra Spdif connections in the way and that might not be desirable (would you hear it though?)..

A DAC bake off was mentioned at my last meeting, trouble is some are faffy to set up so source would need to be a cd transport ideally, but then one of the best DAC's I have heard only has USB input!

A superbly informative video of this 'newly' DAC

Implementation is definitely more important than chipset, I'm sure of it. I've heard ESS Sabre DACs that can take your head off while my LKS throws an image that is wider and deeper than the Caiman SEG's Wolfson, itself very good in that regard. While an old school DAC with Burr Browns made some of the nicest music I've ever heard.

Hopefully, I will have a streamer to play with at the weekend Good idea about the USB to SPDIF converter it would work but suspect I would not get the best out of the SOtM

We can compare I2S into the D70 and LKS which will give us an insight into what each does with the music. This is going to be very interesting.

My understanding (though may well be wrong) is that if you're using a usb input on a dac then you're effectively using a usb/spdif converter anyway - just inside the dac itself. If so, then you might actually get more out of the sotm with an external usb interface that's better than the one inside the dac. But I might be misremembering.

My thoughts is that you adding an extra conversation that might increase jitter

If it really does add an extra conversion then yes that would be a concern. But if the conversion from usb to spdif is already going on insde the dac anyway then you'd not be adding a conversion stage, just relocating it. And depending on how it's implemented in the dac it could actually stand to improve things. But again, I might be misremembering this

Interesting - I guess it will be dac-dependent then, with newer dacs more likely to do things differently - maybe worth finding out how things are set-up with the usb input in the D70.

If it just reclocking then that gives another option

I'll be bringing my Audiophilleo to Martin's on Saturday, so I can connect the Pro-Ject streamer to the LKS, so you'll be welcome to experiment.
