VERY relieved that you are ok, Chris. Nasty situation and can all too easily escalate to way beyond your experiences.

An Englishman walks into a pub. There's normally a Scotsman, Welshman and an Irish man too. But they’re still at the World Cup. Meanwhile, here's the latest team photo. And this was seen in a newsagent's window in Twickenham.

Wonder what The Pope had for his tea.

I don't know, but I reckon bacon sarnies at the Vatican must be proper dodgy, going on the type of bread those folks tend to favour.

Have to admit, taking Holy Communion used to freak me out a bit when I was young.

Why do public speakers, arriving to give a presentation, rely totally on their laptop to work at the event, having no fallback means of opening their files whatsoever?

... my pet hate - presentations with Power Point slides (the Devil's work....)
The best public speakers I've seen, including academics, rely on their knowledge of the subject and the ability to convey that in an interesting, convincing and sometimes amusing way. The worst hope reams of projected garbage will somehow save the day.

I always try to have a back up - and test the AV equipment well before the presentation. I've been to quite a few talks that have been ruined because the presenter doesn't know how to get the screen to work.
A recent talk was spoiled by a great ape. I was in the Bodongo lecture theatre at Edinburgh Zoo (part of the ape house). A gorilla was marching up and down one of the metal walkways outside the theater making as much noise as he could. And that was a lot. To be fair, I'm not sure that forward planning would have been any use in those circumstances. It somewhat spoiled the talk on the management of the Patagonian Toothfish fishery in South Georgia....

Why is it that football shoes are called boots?

And today's award for thread-revival goes too... I'm looking at pillows at the moment, and wondering whether those memory-foam jobs are any good. I've come across several products on Amazon that boast being filled with "shredded memory foam." Now, is it just me, or #1 - wouldn't that rather defeat the object of memory foam, and #2 - shouldn't they just be labelled "foam" now? [EDIT] I've just found this description and thought it worth sharing... " Anti-mite, Breathable, Thermo regulator, Antistatic, Artistries, Ecological, Ergonomic, Micro perforated, Antibacterial, Hypoallergenic and Ant snoring, Each Pillow comes in separate bag"
