We both love the Norman recording (it's the only one I bought on vinyl) but I'm more than happy to have a number of different interpretations on hand.
I think Janowitz is a cultured and eloquent soprano; I also enjoy a lot of her phrasing. Wasn't so sure about some of HVK's accomplishment but need to get better acquainted...

Also well worth a listen is the late Aga Mikolaj who so tragically passed away from COVID complications at the height of the pandemic, aged just 50.
This was her first solo recording from 2009. A most musical performance with a crystalline clarity. For an operatic soprano it's so pleasing that she doesn't overplay the role as some have done ...
The first three parts are wonderful, the finale not quite upheld by the orchestra, but I still find this highly enjoyable and moving.

Not listened to it in a long time but it never made it into my playlist of best recordings. I did hear that she was in better voice for the earlier mono recording but not listened to it. I'm going to listen again to the stereo version and see if my opinion has changed.

I never really warmed to it, but I thought it worth a revisit too.

The one I really struggled with previously that won so many plaudits is Soile Isokoski, so I'll revisit that as well.

See if you fare better than I did with this new recording released today - I lasted 1'37".

I tried Beim Schlafengehen. She's not ready yet. Give her another 20 years.
In the opening of Im Abendrot, I hear the same stunning accompaniment from the Gewandhausorchester that I know from the Jessye Norman. At least that part is gorgeous, if taken a little faster.
This is nicer than the Isokoski.

I tried the opening. Way too 'operatic' for my liking with a very wide vibrato that often made her intonation sound wrong. I also found her voice rather harsh, the phrasing liking guile and finesse. All about artifice and not true emotion. Apart from that, all good ...
