Yep, that's exactly the kind of pricing for a few pieces of wood that I was trying to avoid.

Known in the timber trade as Oregon pine, Columbian pine or British Columbian pine

My impressions after a couple of listening sessions are that everything seems slightly tighter focused, less bloated in size, and the sound of the recording environment comes through more clearly. It's subtle but definitely there.
I guess that raising the cables off the (in my case) cold hard floor puts more air dielectric around them, usually a good thing. Could be vibration pickup, too. The effect is bound to be different depending on your cables and floor.
For me, for the cost, it's a nice no-brainer upgrade.

Before you find this subject completely risible (sorry, I couldn't help it), read on. I've been wanting to try cable risers for a while but haven't been prepared to spend the outrageous sums asked by the vendors. Call it anything to do with hi-fi, add a little foo gravy to the story and the vendors are marking up simple things by hundreds of percent over cost. So, how to try getting my cables off the floor without breaking the bank? I decided to find a company working with the materials I wanted (in this case, wood) but nothing to do with the hi-fi industry and unlikely to twig what I wanted them for. I sent them a simple design, allowed them to misinterpret it as a children's toy (it's what they do) and asked for a quote. The result is I have just received 16 of these nicely finished custom oak risers, cut to fit my speaker cables, for the princely sum of £28 delivered. dude the prices charged by vendors as you call them are usually at set prices, RD never grasped that concept, the prices are fixed by the manufacturer, and before you all go off on one most if not all have never tried the majority of them so cannot comment as to if they are worth the money. a piece of wood is about as effective as the bottom of an egg container, it looks nicer though!

David, the Cardas example given above is not even the most expensive I have seen for a few pieces of wood.
I note that you carry the Furutech NCF Booster at £290 for a single one. I'm sure you'll tell me that it's the dog's danglies but at that price it had better be!
In any case, there is nothing wrong with trying the idea out independently, it's also fun to go off piste and have something made. In my case, a small gain for a small price.

Martin Your best up-grade ever is about to arrive LOL
You would get just as good or better effect by resting your cables on sorbothane domes.

Lateral thinking - a good approach. I once had a local glass company make me up a turntable platter - did the job well for hardly any money at all. In fact I told the glazier why I wanted it and he was happy to get such an unusual request... Did you explain what a Hifi company would be likely to charge ? No - I kept quiet about that...

I now added the cable risers to my system I noticed when doing this my mains cable to the Behringerr was touching one of the bass Speaker leads. I not noticed before as space is tight. I managed to tidy up all the cables More sense of depth and resonance in terms of hearing instruments such as the cello and violin It allows natural harmonics more body too
