I "discovered" Dire Straits through a recommendation from Chris Frankland, writing in Hi Fi Answers magazine, way back in 1978.
I bought the debut album and was hooked!
I agree with Martin, regarding his comments about "Communique" which is my personal favourite Dire Straits album.
Not long after the release of "Making Movies" I was lucky enough to see them in concert at Lancaster University in late 1980.

Thanks, Martin. I'd not come across that version before and I enjoyed it very much. And I pretty much concur with your summary / review in the first post. When I do play Dire Straits (usually on vinyl for some reason - I have several albums I bought when they were released and the re-mastered box set) it is usually their first album and BiA that I play. Petea, Please check your messages!

Knopfler's one of the very few 'oldies' that are still producing top quality music.. Long may it last..

I really like Mark guitar tone slightly overdriven that allows the guitar to really sing. But I am kind of with Chris I like Dire Straits in small doses but I just rarely listen to them

Great band. Also like some of his solo stuff, Ragpicker's Dream being a particular favourite.

Tried again for the nth time
Same as usual. It's ok. Inoffensive. Nothing stands out for me. Talent for sure. Good pub band
One of those bands that should be right up my street

Wow - I don't think of Dire Straits as 'poppy' at all! Perhaps it's the early albums that I mostly listen to.

I wonder how many of you have heard this one... I first came across it when it turned up on a record delivered to my old local for the jukebox. We played it to death. You were bloody great last time you come. I thought me 'ead was stuck in't bass drum. Bloody loud, me bloody head hurts. Got any badges posters stickers and t-shirts? It's from the Dancing By The Pool EP. All Dire Straits albums are essential listening. Brothers In Arms did get overplayed. Love Over Gold is my favourite (and the one that gets a regular outing) followed by the first album. Oasis of good guitar music during the synth heavy 80s. Mark has maintained the quality on his solo albums though he leans to a folkier style. Maybe not for everyone.
