Well life is never simple, just ask a Tory at the moment even the Corbinester's
Today was another lesson in what goes in must come out, putting the finishing touches to a pair of personal amplifiers at the moment and managed to squeeze in a few hours of meter twirling and metal gluing today in between customers.
Engineering to excess or just feeling the motto "Too much is not enough?", well this week my custom TX's arrived for the new monoblocks so I took advantage of the time between the work commitments to shoe horn these new doughnuts of power into the chassis.
Having spent a solid hour in real listening mode, OK performance noted lock away in the grey matter labelled "Music Zone"
A few adjustments required to casework to enable locating of said TX's in suitable local which made rewiring easy, new retaining M12 bolts cut to size, Mr.C's TX support system in place. all joints nice and clean heat shrink check Yep.
Good to go, change 'fuse' to one less costly for testing, strap in dummy load, signal generator set we are ready Captain.
No odd noise or smells, the circuit protection I designed in has not tripped either over voltage or current, all green on the board.
400Hz tone sounding fine. Lid replaced time for the acid test.
All leads in place, main reactor power up all green again, cue power on LED is blazing away well (must really see to this lol) select appropriate track we have lift off Huston, all sound ok just a touch bright at the top (would always expect this with new TX's or mains smoothing caps so no big surprise) leave running for 90 minutes or so attending to poorly Esoteric Dac.
Well the runners and riders at the off, transformer which was exchanged a decent 500Va dual secondary tap unit fully run in over the last 3 months, new boy 50% increase in core size same spec's. just 68 amps instead of 25 now
Humm well what to really expect, not sure have never had an amplifier to such a sorted design before so new territory for me:-
To say the presence band increased a tad is like saying niam make good sounds , the texture and depth now are really quite something, the micro detail is still causing me problems in that I really have never recalled hearing so far into the recording. Not all positive thoughts yet, the sound stage is pinched compares to a few hours early plus there is a tinge of brightness on certain notes and it is a touch disjointed. However all these downsides will even out over time as they did when I first put the amps together.
It still never ceases to amaze me how much power has an effect on the whole sonic picture, currently enjoying some damn fine music and hearing the changes as the gradually unfold.
You have to love this hobby
