Time for this classical music lover to have another crack at a non-classical album choice. I learned of this band on a visit to a hifi buddy and was immediately struck by their emotional intensity and lyric power. He said that he usually played their music to 'hifi visitors' but mostly they didn't like it; certainly the band is a challenge if you are averse to folk music! Show of Hands is an English duo from Devon, formed in 1986 - "'Gravel voiced spokesman of the rural poor'. Rooted in English traditional music the songs are shot through with diverse influences from music across the world, including the blues, Americana and Latin rhythms." A diverse selection of songs here, I guess my own favourites are Roots and Country Life.

Thanks, Jerry, not something I’m at all aware of, so look forward to it.

I have to confess that not all of the tracks are to my taste, by any means, but my 10/10 rating is for the best of them! Powerful stuff.

Playing this now. Mention folk to some folk and the word immediately conjures up a certain stereotype. There is no singing with one finger in the ear going on here! I quite like what I'm hearing so far.

Sadly this album is not on Qobuz. Wow, the Spotify level is very high = compressed on the opening.
Are We Alright and Exile are more to my taste.
I don't mind this kind of folk at all. There's a little bit of Canadian Cajun in there, too (thinking of Courage of Lassie). 7/10.

I'm very happy with your choice, Jerry. Not because I like Show of Hands (although I do) but because you've chosen a "Best Of..." album. People generally moan about them - I've got loads, mostly where I really don't want twelve albums from a band just to own the fifteen or twenty tracks I like. Until now I've resisted using them as "Album Of The Month" choices, but you've just made it open season on collections. So, thanks, Jerry, you may live to regret your choice. Put me back on the rota lads.

I've only had time to play the first album in this set, I'll play the second one after the footy. Playing this was really only to help me decide between a "9" or a "10" though, and the amount of head-nodding, foot-tapping, chorus-singing, and general smiling I've done throughout album #1 definitely warrants a 10/ 10 from me. Bob Harris used to play "Roots" quite often on his shows, and that's what first prompted me to check the band out. They make a lot of noise for two blokes, don't they? For anyone wondering, by the way, the female vocalist on "The Blue Cockade" is Miranda Sykes. She's not bad for a double-bass player.

7/10 from me. The tracks I enjoyed were great but there were a couple that I really din't get on with.

I meant to add earlier that Crow on the Cradle is an excellent song and well performed. It's my kind of minor-key writing

I marked it a 10 for the several "best" imo tracks, which for me are quite outstanding - some really don't do much for me and would rate a 2/10 probably! Up to you.

Boyzone's Greatest Hits. Should be a short listen! Well, that's ruined the bloody surprise. I'll have to have a rethink now. Hmmmm... Rollers, or Showaddywaddy? Tough choice.
