Either Mull or Skye as they are beautiful. I generally prefer the west coast. If you can visit Loch Ness, also well worth it.
Gorgeous country.

This hotel has a great location near the British Museum - an American friend of ours uses it regularly ... www.morganhotel.co.uk/

Yes big thumbs up for Mull and Skye, completely stunning. Agreed on the West Coast also! The problem is with Scotland there is just so much to see. There are masses of online guides - I'd spend some time with these if you haven't already to try and whittle it down. Although packed with tourists, Edinburgh is certainly worth a visit, lots to see. Do try and see a few of the stately homes and castles, there are some stunning examples all over Scotland. Awesome. Thanks guys.
When going somewhere new, it's hard knowing places worth visiting. Everything looks good on the internet and travel books.

If you are into your history, the battlefield of Culloden is very much worth visiting - I found it very moving and it had an amazing atmosphere ...

I've just remembered Glen Coe. Staggeringly beautiful and the location, of course, of the famous massacre.

I spent a few days in and around the Kintyre Peninsula in November, back there for the first time in years. A place that's a little less visited but no less stunning in terms of scenery than anywhere else in Scotland. Normally, when asked to recommend things to see in Scotland, the first thing I say is "You have to go and see The Burrell Collection in Glasgow". But it's currently being refurbished, so you can't. Therefore, I won't! I quite like the East Neuk of Fife, which most people have never heard of. Geographically, it's like a cross between Cornwall, Lincolnshire and The Black Isle. The Black Isle is great too! And then, I lived in and loved Dumfriesshire for a few years...
There is something amazing to see and do almost anywhere in Scotland.
As for cities, Edinburgh is great and all very well, but Glasgow is far more interesting as far as I'm concerned.

Sorted where we are going.
Off the ferry at Cairnryan, to Saquhar (great grandmother was born there). Glasgow for a couple of nights. Furnace x 1, Skye x 2, Inverness x 3, 1 spare night somewhere and Edinburgh for 3 nights.
Should be a blast!

Sanquar... well, if there was ever a placename in need of a limerick, Sanquar is it!
I lived and worked in the Nith valley in my first three years after college. Sanquar is not exactly picturesque but the drive up the valley is beautiful. Drop in at Drumlanrig Castle on your way. I used to live in a house in the park there. Even if you don't go into the castle, it's well worth seeing, as it is spectacular.
From Sanquar, double back a few miles and go over the Lowther Hills, via Durisdeer, to meet the M74 north. You won't regret it - the views are fantastic.

Two weeks back from my holiday. Has taken this long to settle. And catch up on work.
12 days in Ireland, 13 days in Scotland, 3 days Amsterdam, 3 days London. If I'd come over when I was 19, I would have wanted to stay. London for me in 1981? Heaven musically.
Many highlights. Banksy was one. Where one side of my family came from was another. A few too many castles. A few too many pints. Doune Castle (What? The curtains?) Cute towns. Skellig Michael. The Cilffs of Despair (Moher) French pastries. Friendly people. Portree. Bannockburn. Ullapool Inverness Skara Brae. John.
The whole trip done in shorts. Got looked at like I was crazy.
Will be coming back. Just have to save up again.
