Just thought I'd pop this up, as it's a newish service and people might not be aware. I didn't know you could do this until last week, but you can now renew UK passports online, not only is it simple to do, but it's £9.50 cheaper than filling out the traditional forms.
Go to the website, fill out a few personal details, supply your old passport number and upload a digital photograph (which I took myself) and that's it. Pop your old passport in an envelope to the passport office so they can cancel it and you can track your new passport's progress online. Ever so easy and being able to upload a digital image saves the expense of getting one done.
I'm impressed.

That's a major turnaround on the photos - for many years they insisted the photo must be from a 'photo-booth' and most definitely would not even accept selfies however good they were.

I used the service not so long ago to renew mine, Tim. My first uploaded photo was rejected but the second try was fine.

This simple procedure is for a replacement or renewal, you can still apply on-line for a first passport but it's not quite as straightforward and you do need someone to confirm your identity, but this can also be completed on-line with a digital photograph by someone on the 'official list' of acceptable people who meet certain criteria. It takes longer too, 6 weeks, whereas this renewal should be completed in 3.
My photograph was accepted first attempt, but I did take some care about the quality of the picture.
I have no doubt that the amount of information they hold about me and the number of facial pictures they have on record, makes the facial recognition process a formality, if the picture is of sufficient quality. Lets face it, pretty much every-time I pass through a UK entry border these days, it's a machine that lets me in.

Every time I look at my phone it lets me in (facial recognition). I wonder where that data might end up?

Application made on Tuesday afternoon, old passport received on Wednesday, new passport delivered on Friday - now that is pretty impressive two weeks before Christmas!
