Just picked up a slightly rough looking pair of these from a charity shop for £20.
Anybody got any info or opinions on them they would care to share?

Just found an old AOS post about some as well. Think it's the m20 golds I've just bought.
Got them hooked up and they're sounding great!

Which ones are they Chris? The Mercury name has been used so many times by Tannoy it's untrue.

Ah, OK. I think that's the original ones. I had the Mercury MkII, which Martin Colloms had a hand in designing. It has the 4-sided tweeter with a ribbed faceplate. Bargain for £20 - well done!

They look to be in good nick Chris and a definite bargain for twenty quid, how are you finding them?

My ANKs cost £350. These cost £20. The ANKs are not £330s worth of better.
They ARE better but that's my rule of thumb.

The Mercury Golds were budget boxes when released but very good ones. I'd have been very surprised to read that they outperformed your AN/k's however (says the guy who is currently enjoying a pair of cheapskate speakers more than his 1600 quid Skibo's...)

If you heard them blind, side by side and were told of the price difference I reckon most folk would keep their hand in their pockets.
That's not how hifi works though is it.....

The standard Mercury was about £110 - 120 in '82 or '83. The others in the range were the little Titan that has a slightly angled baffle so you could put them on a shelf tight to the back wall but still have a little toe-in (I think that's right - my memory's not so good), there was also a Saturn, Jupiter and Venus - the Planet range. The Gold version of the Mercury was a bit more because of the real wood veneer. They were a best buy and well regarded. You'd be paying considerably more than the £200 they were then to buy something of that quality now.

I had an opportunity to listen to a pair of Tannoy Oxford's for the first time a couple of years ago, now they were a bit special.

Audio Note Ks mate. Early pair from 1993. Lovely and work well in my living room as they're in corners.
As I've said my listening a a bit limited - I had Mission 732s before them,Mordaunt Shorts ms10s,my mate had ms25is so now it's just the ANKs and the Tannoys - so don't pay too much attention to me.

Great attitude. I like that about this place. I get a bit embarrassed sometimes due to my limited experiences and serious lack of technical knowledge but I am trying to improve upon it and so far everyone's been very helpful. I try to offer back what I can.

I'm the same Chris although some of the techy stuff is beginning to sink into this thick head of mine, hence my tentative foray into speaker mods. I wouldn't go near a valve amp though, I'd be pushing up daisy's in less than ten seconds... "Oh look, pretty".... ZAAAAAP!!!!

For me it's the fact none of my pals are into this stuff - they'd prefer sore noses and booze - but I kind of relish my time at home and discovering forums is a big help. I took the amp in to get it biased before and asked the bloke if I could watch but he wasn't keen on the idea. That was a year and a half ago. I did have online instructions but I'm the same as you - Either ZAAAP or a house fire. Fuck that.

In all seriousness forums have been a boon for me, I've learnt so much since I first joined a hifi forum getting on for six years ago now, that forum being Vinyl Engine. It never ceases to amaze me how patient those who possess bags of experience in, and knowledge of our hobby, can be, and most are more than happy to help newbies out
