Japanese broadcaster NHK says it has been developing 8K, which it calls super-hi vision, since 1995. Warner Bros has scanned the original 70mm film negatives of 2001: A Space Odyssey in 8K in order to produce the most “vivid” version of Stanley Kubrick’s epic yet for the channel's major opening broadcast, and NHK will show Audrey Hepburn’s My Fair Lady in 8K next year. It also has plans to do the same with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The channel will also broadcast live from Italy to showcase "popular tourist attractions from Rome, as well as food, culture and history". NHK's new channel BS8K will broadcast programmes for about 12 hours a day. The first programme at 10:00 local time (01:00 GMT) will be an information broadcast, highlighting future shows on the channel. Television manufacturers including Samsung and LG have announced 8K-capable television sets, so if you fancy your spaghetti in 8K, be prepared to shell out around £10,000 for a compatible TV set. Well it was bound to happen! I'm only about to move onto 4K like most people. Two thoughts - of course domestic tv's are getting bigger and bigger, but one has to wonder what 8K can offer in the domestic viewing environment. The other thing is while there are 8K movie cameras being used right now, what about broadcast TV cameras? I will ask a man who will know ...

If you consider screen size and viewing angle, very few of us will ever fully realise the resolution of 4K TV.
I am amazed at how good HD looks on a 4K set and am about to get Sky Q for real 4K.
I don't think 8K is going to interest me much.

Indeed. A lot of 4K TVs benefit from the new HDR technology so rez definitely not the only benefit of upgrading.

. We all said that about 4K nearly 5 years ago ! Now I'm here with a 75" Sony and Panasonic UHD DMP-UB900. What gets me a lot, is the HDR aspect, who would have thought it ? It may be that 8K on an 85" is better ? I'll wait and see what pans out over the next 5+ years, I'll not hold my breath though.

HDR is good and worth having.

Here's a very instructive video about the marginal gains with 4K and the silliness of 8K for TVs. It's rather well presented.

In my case none of that rhetoric is actually true. 4K is better even without HDR, and until I actually see 8K the jury is out for me too !
